Sreenath (Malayalam: ശ്രീനാഥ്; August 26, 1956 – April 23, 2010) was a popular Malayalam film and television actor. He acted in many hit films, including Shalini Ente Koottukari, Ithu Njangalude Katha, Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, and Kireedam.

Sreenath was a Shiv Sena candidate from the Attingal Lok Sabha constituency in 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Biography

At the start of his film career, he worked with actress Shanthi Krishna in a few hit movies and fell in love during the shoot of Ithu Njangalude Katha. He later married her at Guruvayoor Temple in September 1984. But the marriage didn't work and the two parted ways in September 1995.

He wed again to Latha later. The couple has a son named Viswajith.

The movie begins with Sethurama Iyer Mammooty visiting Isow Alex (Kalabhavan Mani), a convicted serial killer who is awaiting his execution. Alex was arrested and convicted for the cold-blooded murder of seven people in two different families. Alex, who had been living a wild life then, had committed the crime high on narcotic drugs. The murder case was left to the CBI for investigation and an able officer, played by Siddique, nabbed Alex in no time. Alex is now a new man, mainly due to the influence of a priest (Gopi), who requests Iyer to visit Alex.

The film is the story of Rajeevan, an advocate and Nandita Menon, a writer. Rajeevan is married to Rekha, a bank employee, and has two kids. Though a lawyer by profession, Raghunandan Menon (Suresh Gopi) finds happiness in farming. He leads a happy life along with his family consisting of mother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), elder brother, and his family. Raghunandan's fiancee Lekha (Suvarna Mathew) is a research student in literature. One night, on a usual walk through his farm, Raghu saves a severely wounded girl (Geetha]). On the next morning, she introduces herself as Sethulakshmi and informs him that she was brutally raped by gang of men, who later dumped her. Raghu offers her shelter in his farmhouse for next couple of days. Lekha, who happened to make a surprise visit finds Sethu in the farmhouse, whom she mistakes to be having an affair with Raghu. His explanations fail to convince her. Up on knowing about a girl staying at the farmhouse, Harinandan Menon (Lalu Alex), the elder brother, who is also a senior police officer arrives at the farmhouse. He is shocked to see Sethulakshmi and returns suddenly without saying anything. Sethu explains Raghu that Hari was one among those men who raped her. On reaching home to know more about the incident, Hari confesses of his mistake and tries to justify that he was in an inebriated condition. But Raghu is adamant of giving justice to Sethu. Raghu in attempt of bringing justice to Sethu faces severe opposition from within his house including his mom, fiancee and sister-in law. Upon knowing that Sethu is a rape victim, Madhavan (Ravi Vallathol) her fiance shows his unwillingness to accept her. In order to give a new life to her, Raghu marries Sethu and brings her to his house. But at home, he is asked by his sister-in law (Chithra) not to bring Sethu inside. Raghu takes Sethu and drives away.

Sethumadhavan (Mohanlal) is released after serving an imprisonment of seven years in central jail for murdering Keerikadan Jose, a hardcore criminal. Though it was an accident, which he did to save his life, the society is not ready to accept it. For them, he is now a hardcore criminal, who had killed someone who ruled the streets for long years. Up on release, Sethu visits the medical college to meet his younger brother who is doing a course in medicine. But his brother responds coldly and openly ask him not to make any visit as it may hurt his reputation. Sethu realizes that the world around him has undergone a severe change. At home, though his mother (Kaviyoor Ponnamma) is too happy to see him, his father Achuthan Nair (Thilakan) is not too keen to have him at home. Achuthan Nair, who always wanted Sethu to be a police inspector broke down completely after Sethu's conviction and has turned into an alcoholic. Remorseful Sethu looks forward to building up a life outside jail, but fails to find a job due to the tag of 'ex-convict' labelled on him. Sethu tries to catch up with his old friend Najeeb (Maniyan Pillai Raju), who tells him about the present physical condition of Parameshwaran (Johny), whom Sethu had severely assaulted in a bid to save his own life. Fully paralysed, Parameshwaran now runs a cycle repair shop with the help of his wife and daughter. Sethu meets Parameshawaran, who, now is now a completed changed man. With the help of Parameshwaran, Sethu begins selling fish for a living. But the siblings of Keerikadan Jose, who were looking for a chance to revenge on Sethu, attack him violently. He is saved by a girl (Surabhi), who happens to be the daughter of Keerikadan. She expresses sympathy for him and encourages him to live a decent living. Once, in a bid to escape from the brothers of Keerikadan, Sethu beats them up. Achuthan Nair finds fault in Sethu and asks him to stay away from house, which he agrees to. But in no time, he realizes that for his surroundings, he is still a criminal. The local police officer warns Sethu for no reason and humiliates him which creates deep mental anguish to him. Sethu undergoes deep psychological torture, which slowly transforms him to another person. To counter the attacks from the Keerikadan family, Sethu becomes a thug of a local businessman. He slowly becomes a hardcore criminal and has several criminal cases pending in the police station, but overcomes them with the help of local politicians. With time, his relationship with the daughter of Keerikadan grows and he asks her mother (Santhi Krishna) for her hand in marriage, which she refuses flatly citing that he is a criminal whose life has no guarantee. This incident strikes him deeply and he decides to change. In the meantime, Sethumadhavan shockingly finds out that his sister, under the veil of drama acting, is into prostitution, that too with their father acting as the pimp. This deals him a severe mental blow and he reacts violently to his father. Achuthan Nair, unable to face his son, commits suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling fan. Sethumadhavan now shifts back to his old village with the rest of his family and starts farming. Slowly, Keerikadan's wife agrees to get her daughter married to Sethu, but their teenager son maintains a bitter hatred towards Sethu. Karadi Antony, the younger brother of Keerikadan is now released from jail and is back to avenge his brother's death. He hunts down Sethu, but is killed by Sethu in an effort to save himself. But he is shocked when the younger son of Keerikadan at this crucial moment stabs Sethu, whereby he passes out. Sethu advises him to run away from the spot to save himself, else he too will end up as another criminal out of circumstances. Just watching him running away, Sethu closes his eyes for ever.
