Durant des siècles, les habitants d'un village isolé ont sacrifié de jeunes vierges au dragon qui rôdait aux alentours. Ces filles voguaient sur une petite barque avant d'être enlevées par le monstre. Aujourd'hui, les villageois ont abandonné ce rituel, devenu une tradition matrimoniale. Le jour de sa noce, la princesse Mira se soumet bien entendu à cette coutume... C'est alors qu'un dragon refait son apparition et l'abandonne sur une île perdue au milieu de l'océan ! À son réveil, elle fait la rencontre d'un naufragé sans nom, qui la met en garde : le jour, ils sont sains et saufs mais à la nuit tombée, la créature ailée regagne son repaire. The film is set in 1980s Moscow. Standing right in the city centre on Kalinin Prospekt, a barefoot man dressed in a tattered coat appeals to anyone with a strange request: "Tell me the number of your planet in the tenture? Or least the number of your galaxy in the spiral?". Random passers-by, two Soviet citizens previously unknown to each other ("Uncle Vova", a gruff construction foreman from Moscow, Vladimir Mashkov, and a "Violinist", a student from Georgia, Gedevan Aleksidze), start a conversation with him, during which the stranger shows them an alien teleportation device – "traveller". The foreman Mashkov holds out his hand to the device and, despite the stranger's warnings, presses a random button. Suddenly Uncle Vova and the violinist find themselves alone on the desert planet "Pluke" in the "Kin-dza-dza" galaxy. From that point on, the movie describes their long quest to find a way back home.

D'un kolkhoze reculé de l'Altaï, Ivan Rastorgouïev et sa femme Nina partent pour une station thermale sur la mer Noire. Ils laissent derrière eux la vie villageoise, les champs à perte de vue, leurs amis, des tablées chantant les chansons populaires. Leur voyage dans le train est ponctué de situations tragicomiques provoquées par le décalage entre la mentalité de paysan et citadin. Ils y rencontrent un charmant voleur qui se fait passer auprès d'eux pour un ingénieur ferroviaire, leur fait boire du Cognac trouvé dans une valise dérobée dont il inspecte le contenu sur le champ, et s'enfuit à l'arrivée de la milice lancée à ses trousses. S'apercevant de leur erreur, les Rastorgouïev deviennent extrêmement méfiants et voient les criminels partout. Ainsi, ils mettent du temps à faire confiance au professeur linguiste qui se joint à eux dans le compartiment. Mais le brave homme finit par briser la glace et les invite à passer quelques jours chez lui à Moscou. Les Rastorgouïev y découvrent le quotidien d'une famille d'intellectuels et une multitude d'objets dont ils ne soupçonnaient pas l’existence. Ivan se trouve même invité à une conférence linguistique où il raconte devant un parterre médusé une anecdote de sa jeunesse. Puis, le couple poursuit son chemin vers la mer.
