Ivan Poddoubny débarque de Théodosie à Odessa où il rencontre son ami Nikita, un docker (un va-nu-pieds), à qui il confie qu'il n'est pas venu pour travailler dans leur artel mais tenter sa chance en tant que lutteur. En chemin, il rencontre Anatoli Leonidovitch Dourov dont le cirque a brûlé et qui cherche à être embauché comme pitre. Ensemble, ils arrivent au cirque du tonitruant seigneur Giuseppe Truzzi qui a beaucoup de problèmes avec sa fille Estérina qui file le parfait amour avec Orlando considéré par le directeur du cirque comme un vaurien. Ivan n'a pas de problème pour être engagé, car son gabarit et sa renommée plaident en sa faveur, mais Dourov n'est accepté que grâce au soutien du lutteur qui promet de travailler à l'œil pendant une semaine si pendant cette période le clown n'a pas de succès.

In medieval Russia, the aging giant bogatyr Svyatogor gives his sword to some traveling pilgrims to be passed on to a new bogatyr. Svyatogor and his horse become a mountain as he dies. Meanwhile, Asiatic pagans known as the Tugars are ravaging and pillaging the land. They raid the village where the bearded and robust Ilya Muromets lives and capture his future wife Vassilisa. Ilya is unable to defend her because his legs haven't worked since childhood. A man called Mishatychka caught by the Tugars pleads to serve them if they spare him, and promises to be a double agent for them. The pilgrims with Svyatogor's sword come upon the house of Ilya Muromets and cure his ailment with a magical potion and a magical song. They also give him the sword. Later on, he decides to leave his family to go on an epic journey in order to defend Kiev from the Tugars. For this purpose he is given a foal by a neighbour (Mikula Selyaninovich) which magically grows into a steed in three days. He passes by some woods and is confronted by a forest-dwelling monster known as Nightingale the Robber who blows wind so hard it parts the forest backward; Ilya defeats him by throwing a cudgel at him.

This tale is based upon the legends born in ancient times in the old Russian city of Novgorod (the capital of Novgorod republic). Novgorod's merchants are feasting in a gorgeous palace. A young gusli player named Sadko is bragging that he can bring to their land a sweet-voiced bird of happiness. But the merchants are ridiculing him. Nevertheless, Sadko sets off on a travel to bring the bird of happiness to Novgorod. He is offered help by the daughter of the Ocean King - she is mesmerized by Sadko's singing and is in love with him. The hero is destined to visit many lands in his search of the bird. He will come to India, Egypt and other countries. But only on his return to his native Novgorod, would Sadko realize that there is no better land than the one you were born in. And so there is no need to go far in search of one's happiness.

Following the Russian Revolution, Maksim is appointed state commissar in charge of the national bank. Klim Yarko rentre en Ukraine par le train après son service militaire effectué dans une unité blindée. Il avoue aux camarades qui voyagent avec lui ne pas savoir où s'installer, car sans famille il n'est attendu par personne. Il a toutefois une idée. Dans une gazette, il est tombé sur la photo de Mariana Bajan qui dirige une brigade de tractoristes dans un kolkhoze. Il se rend donc à ce kolkhoze à la tombée de la nuit. En chemin, il découvre Mariana qui vient de faire une chute de moto. Il lui porte secours et rentre avec elle au village. Les jeunes gens sympathisent. Klim en tant que bon mécanicien est très bien accueilli par le directeur du kolkhoze Kirill Petrovitch. Toutefois il ne sait pas que, pour repousser les prétendants à son cœur, Mariana avait demandé à l'un des kolkhoziens, un certain Nazar Douma, de se présenter comme son fiancé. Celui-ci prend son rôle très au sérieux et, un matin, essaye de chasser Klim comme les autres. Klim décide de partir, mais à la suite d'un concours de circonstances il devient brigadier de l'unité concurrente de Mariana et chef de Nazar. Nazar n'est pas bien noté par Kirill Petrovitch qui demande à Klim d'améliorer la discipline et le rendement de sa brigade, pour que le fiancé de Mariana devienne un kolkhozien modèle digne de la main de leur meilleure travailleuse. Klim réussit cette mission, mais alors que Kirill Petrovitch évoque dans son bureau la préparation du mariage, il envoie valser les meubles et se met à hurler que ni Nazar ni aucun autre ne se mettra entre lui et sa bien-aimée. Kirill Petrovitch n'en paraît nullement perturbé, il est prêt à donner sa bénédiction à tous les amoureux pourvu qu'ils soient de parfaits tractoristes. Le film se termine par la scène du grand mariage où tout le monde chante des chansons patriotiques et lève son verre vers le portrait du camarade Staline.
