Steve Reevis (born August 14, 1962) is a Blackfoot Native American actor. The role of Shep Proudfoot in the Academy Award-winning film Fargo (1996) is perhaps the best known performance by Reevis.

Biography

Steve Reevis grew up on the Blackfeet Reservation. Steve graduated from South Dakota's Flandreau High School and attended Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas where he received a degree in arts.

His first movie job was as a stunt rider in the 1987 film War Party which also had his brother, Tim. Tim later performed in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show at Disneyland Paris. Steve's first acting roles, in 1988 was in Universal's Twins. His non-speaking role as Cheyenne Warrior #1 in the highly acclaimed Dances With Wolves in 1990 brought face recognition for the young actor and helped to open doors for additional roles. In 1993 he was cast as the Apache scout, Chato, in Geronimo: An American Legend starring Wes Studi as the titular warrior, another role that brought recognition to Steve as an actor. He is probably most recognized for his 1995 Native American lead role in Last of the Dogmen with Tom Berenger.

In 1996, Reevis received an award from First Americans in the Arts (FAITA) for his supporting roles in both the critically acclaimed movie Fargo and in the made-for-television movie Crazy Horse. In 2004 he repeated this honor for his work on the ABC series Line of Fire.

More recently Reevis has appeared in Columbia’s 2003 film The Missing, in the 2005 remake of The Longest Yard, and in TNT's 2005 mini-series Into the West. Reevis also appeared on Fox's drama series Bones.

He resides in Morongo Valley, California.

When a lazy and spoiled 20 year old named Michael Woods invites his cousin Tommy Biggs to come to his house for the weekend, Tommy is excited that he is going to see his cousin after not seeing him for a while. After arriving at Michael's house, he begins to ignore Tommy throughout the weekend, making him feel unwelcome. On the last day for Tommy to leave, Arlene, the housekeeper, has a talk with Michael about ignoring Tommy, and Michael tells her that he will take Tommy to Disneyland and that they will have a good time. As Michael drives both himself and Tommy to Disneyland, he receives a call from his girlfriend, Gina, who is a drama queen and a snob. Gina asks Michael to come to the local racetrack, where she would introduce him to her father, who he had not met previously. Michael agrees, and drops Tommy off at a nearby Kiddie Zone so that he could go to the racetrack. On the way to pick Tommy up, Michael is involved in a minor car accident and gives the wrong information to the victim, Diedre White. When Michael finally arrives back at the Kiddie Zone to get Tommy, he learns from an employee that Tommy had already been picked up by Arlene. When Michael returns home, he and Tommy get into an argument. Tommy leaves the following morning, stating that if Michael ever comes to Montana, he'd like to "return the favor." Tommy's mother later calls Michael's parents to inform them of how rude Michael was to Tommy during his stay and on the top of that police officers arrive at the Woods house informing them about Michael's car accident earlier that day. Michael's parents then decide to punish him by sending him to his aunt Jules ranch in Montana to work for free for a month. His parents also add that if they hear any negative reports from Jules or Tommy, they won't allow Michael to go on his trip to the French Riviera with Gina.

Distraught but skillful bounty hunter Lewis Gates (Tom Berenger) pursues three armed escaped convicts into Montana's Oxbow Quadrangle, followed by his faithful companion called Zip, an Australian cattle dog at the persistence of his unforgiving father-in-law, whom blames Gates for his daughter's tragic death. All Gates finds is a few scraps of cloth, some blood, and an old-fashioned Indian arrow. He takes the arrow to anthropologist Lillian Sloan (Barbara Hershey) who identifies it as a replica of the arrows used by Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. Gates doesn't think it's a replica and, after some library research, develops a long list of people who have disappeared into the Oxbow and a story of a "wild child" captured in the woods in the early 20th century. Now he's convinced that the fugitives were killed by a tribe of Dog Soldiers, a hardy band of native Americans who had somehow escaped the 1864 Sand Creek massacre and survived for 128 years secluded in the Montana Wilderness, killing anyone who threatened to find and expose them.

The film follows the events leading up to the capture of Geronimo in 1886. The Apache Indians have reluctantly agreed to settle on a U.S. government approved reservation. Not all the Apaches are able to adapt to the life of corn farmers, and one in particular, Geronimo, is restless. Pushed over the edge by broken promises and unnecessary actions by the government, Geronimo and 30 other warriors form an attack team which humiliates the government by evading capture, while reclaiming what is rightfully theirs. The plot centers upon Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric), the U.S. cavalry lieutenant charged with capturing the elusive Apache leader with the assistance of a scout leader Al Sieber (Robert Duvall) and a young graduate Britton Davis (Matt Damon). Gatewood is torn by a grudging respect for Geronimo and his people, and his duty to his country. But then all the white men in the film have respect for Geronimo, even as they are trying to hunt him down and kill him. Brigadier General George Crook (Gene Hackman), charged with overseeing the forced settlement of the Apaches on reservations has nothing but admiration for Geronimo. Geronimo surrenders to Crook but later escapes taking half the reservation with him. Gatewood Sieber Davis and a group of soilders are out to capture Geronimo. Crook later resigns from the army and is later replaced by General Nelson Miles. The next day Gatewood Sieber Davis and apache Chato come across some slaughtered Indians. then they stop at a bar but there are bounty hunters there and they threaten to kill Chato for money which results in a shootout in which Sieber is shot and mortally wounded. Gatewood Davis and Chato carry on to Capture Geronimo. Geronimo makes peace with Gatewood and surrenders along with the other apache to General Miles. Gatewood is transferred to a remote Garrison in North Wyoming while Davis resigns from the army.

In 1863, First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar is wounded in the American Civil War. Choosing suicide over having his foot amputated, he takes a horse and rides up to and along the Confederate front lines, distracting them in the process. Despite numerous pot shots, the Confederates fail to shoot him off his mount. Whilst they are distracted, the Union army attacks the line, and the battle ends in a Confederate rout. Dunbar survives, and is allowed to recover properly, receives a citation for bravery, and is awarded Cisco, the horse who carried him, as well as his choice of posting. Dunbar requests a transfer to the western frontier so he can see it before it disappears. Dunbar is initially posted at Ft. Hays, a large fort presided over by a mentally ill and suicidal major who despises Dunbar's enthusiasm. Dunbar requests that the major transfer him to a real frontier fort. Just before he takes his life, The major sends him to an abandoned fort, Fort Sedgewick, with Timmons, a mule wagon provisioner. Dunbar finds the fort deserted and in need of repair. Despite the threat of nearby Indian tribes, he elects to stay and man the post himself. He begins rebuilding and restocking the fort and prefers the solitude afforded him, recording many of his observations in his diary.
