Sivaraman (Mohanlal), an unemployed man, comes to Mumbai to find a job. Unfortunately he loses all his certificates but happens to find Govindan Kutty (Mukesh), who also is a jobless man (from Sivaraman's native place) wandering in Mumbai. They try to get visa from a travel agency but finds no way to gather such massive amount. Govindan Kutty persuades Sivaraman to participate in a bank robbery planned by Thomas (Cochin Haneefa) and his gang - his stammering brother Tyootty (Jagadish) and Alina (who pretends to be Thomas' lover) - which puts them in more trouble as the robbery ends in vain when they hit Pothuval (Innocent). Alina secretly informs the police about the robbery and tells that the entire plan was carried out by Thomas. Thomas, before getting arrested, hides the money, and the place is kept secret except to his lawyer, Nambeeshan (Jagathy Sreekumar). Alina fakes to be in love with Nambeeshan to find the place where the money is hidden.

The movie speaks about the life of Madhavankutty (Mammootty), locally known as "Hitler" due to his tough character, domineering personality and his uncontrolled rage at the youngsters of the area, for stalking his five young sisters. Even though he loves his family more than anything in this world, he fails to express his love. He had been looking after the family since the death of their mother. Their father Pillechan (Innocent) is married again with two daughters and his children from the first marriage do not even speak with him (Madhavankutty's uncle Gangadhara Menon is responsible for the separation between the children and Pillechan, which is revealed in a later part of the story). Madhavankutty's marriage was fixed with his cousin Gauri (Shobhana) and his sister Ammu’s (Vani Viswanath) marriage with Gauri's brother Balachandran (Mukesh). Once in Madhavankutty's absence, Balachandran sneaked in to his house to be with Ammu, but get caught which results in hostility between the two families and Madhavankutty opposes any of the decided marriages to happen between the families. Balachandran on the other hand wants to make them happen.

The film starts with NSG Officer Shyam(Suresh Gopi) arresting a terrorist nicknamed Jagmohan Pandey. Usha Varma(Sharada), the judge of the case happens to be the sister of the Indian Home Secretary Rajan Varma(Lalu Alex). In retaliation to the arrest, the terrorists kill Unni, Usha's son. Following this incident the government enlists Z Category protection for Justice Usha Varma and her family.Rajan Varma and Balram(Ratheesh) decide to give the assignment to the Black Cat Commando Team under Shyam's command. Shyam kills Manasi's (Priya Raman) boyfriend Nathuram when he was trying to trespass her home and so they starts hating Shyam. Manasi does not know that her boyfriend was part of the terrorist group planning to kill Usha. Nathuram had been lying that he is based from France, while in reality, he was working with the terrorist group. The terrorists led by Abbas Qureshi later kidnap Manasi and she understands the truth. After Manasi's kidnap and learning about her son's assassination, Usha Varma requests Shyam's help to keep her alive until she reads the verdict in Pandey's case at the Supreme Court. Later during the exchange for Manasi's release Shyam infiltrates the terrorist hideout as Pandey along with plenty of other officers. While Pandey manages to kill Balram, Shyam finishes off both Pandey and Abbas Qureshi. The Varma family thanks him for his help, and Manasi apologizes for her hatred towards him.

Hindustan Colony, lying on the suburbs of the city, is a typical Indian city side colony, populated mainly with middle-class and lower-class people who are busy with their own day-to-day issues.
