Jim Tahna, a quiet and solitary man, explains in voice-over narration his hatred of society and his employers, though he enjoys his work as security guard, as it allows him long periods of solitude. On his vacation time, he engages in dark tourism, the visitation of murder sites. His current subject is Carl Marznap, a mass murderer and arsonist. He leaves Yonkers, New York, to visit Carl's home in California. His neighbor at the cheap motel in which he stays, Iris, turns out to be a prostitute. Nervous, Jim fumbles in conversation with her, then states in voice-over how much he hates prostitutes. At a local restaurant, he meets Betsy, a friendly waitress. Jim introduces himself to her as Carl and falsely claims that his sister has been diagnosed with cancer. Betsy and Jim draw closer over their difficult lives, and she invites him to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

C'est une tentative de transposition à l'époque contemporaine du roman d'Emily Brontë : Les Hauts de Hurlevent. Les landes sauvages du roman initial sont abandonnées au profit de la côte californienne (même si le tournage s'est fait en fait à Porto Rico). L'héroïne s'appelle Cate, appartenant à une famille aisée ayant son manoir sur cette côte, et son frère aîné, Hindley, est renommé en Hendrix. L'âme sœur de Cate est Heath, d'origine plus modeste, qui rêve de devenir une rock star, mais, s'il attire l'attention de Cate, il déchaîne aussi la jalousie de son frère Hendrix. Cate est également attirée par Edward et Isabel Linton, des adolescents riches et choyés.

The film largely tells the story of the expedition itself, but occasionally flashes to the present where the members of expedition are giving evidence in a military court. The enquiry is to determine which members were at fault for the failure of the expedition, meaning that the story is told in flashback as the men remember it. Initially, the soldiers are shown training while a voiceover by expedition leader Lt. Col. Robert Niell (Simon Dutton) tells us that there will be five British Army soldiers, two Territorial Army soldiers and three Hong Kong Chinese soldiers on the expedition.
