Biography

À huit ans, elle apparaît dans Treffen in Travers de Michael Gwisdek et continue sa carrière tout en allant à l'école jusqu'à son abitur en 1999. Sur les conseils d'Andreas Dresen, elle étudie de 2000 à 2005 à la Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock . En 2007, elle intègre l'ensemble du Staatstheater Nürnberg .

East Germany in 1980: Barbara (Nina Hoss) is a chain-smoking physician whom we meet as she is arriving for her first day at a small rural hospital near the Baltic Sea. She had been at the prestigious Charité hospital in East Berlin but, after she'd filed an "Ausreiseantrag" – an official request to leave East Germany – she had been incarcerated and then transferred to this small town where she is still monitored by the Stasi. Twice in the film, we see the Stasi punish Barbara for the hours in which they cannot find her, by searching her house, strip-searching and cavity-searching her.

In 1967, the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, visits West Berlin to attend a performance at the Deutsche Oper. Angered at the Shah's repressive policies in governing Iran, a number of young Germans show up to protest his appearance. Hannah et Paul paraissent un couple très heureux. Mais Paul est tombé amoureux d'une femme de 24 ans, avec qui il entretient une liaison. La fille de Hannah, Pia, 20 ans, a une bonne relation avec sa mère. Elle peut lui parler de tout, même du "grand amour", qu'elle a trouvé en son nouveau copain Erik. Elle dit aussi à sa mère que sa colocataire Charlotte aime un homme marié. Hannah nie d'abord que Paul puisse la tromper, car son mari s'implique beaucoup dans son travail. Mais il rentre souvent tard à la maison. Lorsqu'il lui annonce qu'il doit partir plusieurs jours pour un congrès et qu'il ne veut qu'elle l'accompagne, le couple se dispute. Hannah se rend compte que Paul la trompe. Pia, qui ne remarque pas la situation, raconte à sa mère que Charlotte veut apprendre le suédois. Hannah, qui ne veut pas renoncer à un mariage qui dure depuis 20 ans, s'inscrit à ce cours. Hannah rencontre Charlotte en se donnant le nom de Laura et devient son amie.
