Dame Agnes Sybil Thorndike CH, DBE (24 October 1882 – 9 June 1976) was an English actress who toured internationally in Shakespearean productions, often appearing with her husband Lewis Casson. Bernard Shaw wrote Saint Joan specially for her, and she starred in it with great success. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1931, and Companion of Honour in 1970.

Biography

Sybil Thorndike reçoit une formation de pianiste avant de s'orienter vers le théâtre (à l'instigation de son frère, l'auteur Russell Thorndike ), où elle sera très active de 1904 à 1969. Elle se produit notamment dans des pièces de William Shakespeare et de George Bernard Shaw (ce dernier écrira Sainte Jeanne pour elle). Hors le Royaume-Uni, elle effectue des tournées aux États-Unis, en Australie et en Afrique du Sud. À Broadway, elle joue dans cinq pièces, la première fois en 1907, la dernière fois en 1957.

Au cinéma, elle apparaît de 1921 à 1963, notamment dans Le Grand Alibi (1950) d'Alfred Hitchcock, avec Jane Wyman et Marlene Dietrich, ou encore Le Prince et la Danseuse (1957) de et avec Laurence Olivier (et Marilyn Monroe). Et notons qu'elle reprend au cinéma certains des rôles qu'elle a précédemment interprétés au théâtre (Macbeth, Sainte Jeanne, Oncle Vania...).

Sybil Thorndike participe également, pour la télévision, à des téléfilms (dès 1939) et séries, jusqu'en 1970.

Michael O'Malley (Needs), rushes to his priest to tearfully inform him that he has accidentally killed his closest friend, Rachel Mathias (Parry). The story is told in flashback as Michael recounts their friendship, when he first befriended Rachel after she was bullied at school. They quickly become the best of friends. The young children decide to become "blood brothers" by pricking their fingers and rubbing the blood together. They set off for an adventure, hoping to go to London to visit the queen, but instead are picked up by a kindly elderly lady (Sybil Thorndike) who takes them to her home for tea, pretending that she is a princess and that her mansion is one of the queen's homes, but that the queen is currently away. Her amiable deception goes over perfectly, and the children have a great time visiting with her.
