Tengiz Abuladze (Georgian: თენგიზ აბულაძე; January 31, 1924 in Kutaisi — March 6, 1994 in Tbilisi) was a Georgian film director.

Abuladze studied theatre direction (1943–1946) at the Shota Rustaveli Theatre Institute, Tbilisi, Georgia, and filmmaking at the VGIK (All-Union State Institute of Cinematography) in Moscow. He graduated VGIK in 1952 and in 1953 he joined Gruziya-film (Georgia Film Studios) as a director. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Soviet Union in 1980.

His first film, Magdana's Donkey (1955), which he directed with Rezo Chkheidze won the "Best Fiction Short" award at the 1956 Cannes International Film Festival. He is most famous for his film trilogy: The Plea (The Supplication) (1968), The Tree of Desire (1976), and Repentance (1984, released 1987), which won him the Lenin Prize (1988) and the first Nika Award for Best Picture. Repentance won the Special Jury Prize at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. In 1987 he was a member of the jury at the 15th Moscow International Film Festival.

Biography

Tenguiz Abouladzé suit des études à l'École technique des chemins de fer avant de s’inscrire à l’institut de théâtre à Tbilissi. Il continue à Moscou dans la haute école d’État pour la cinématographie (VGIK) dans la classe de Sergueï Ioutkevitch. Il termine ses études avec Dmitri Arakichvili (1953), un documentaire sur ce compositeur géorgien. Abouladzé réalise un deuxième documentaire, Notre palais en 1954, mais sa carrière ne se vraiment lance qu'avec ses films de fiction. Il en fera sept au total, entre 1955 et 1984. Son œuvre consiste en des adaptations de la littérature géorgienne — à l’exception du scénario original du Repentir —, et il a toujours participé à l’écriture du scénario (son tout premier film de fiction exclu).

Il est particulièrement connu pour son film Le Repentir (Monanieba), qui obtint le Grand prix au Festival de Cannes 1987 et six prix Nika dont le Nika de la meilleure réalisation en 1988.

Mort à Tbilissi, le réalisateur est inhumé au Panthéon Didube.

Repentance is set in a small Georgian town. The film starts with the scene of a woman preparing cakes. A man in a chair is reading from a newspaper that the town's mayor, Varlam Aravidze (Avtandil Makharadze) has died. One day after the funeral the corpse of the mayor turns up in the garden of his son's house. The corpse is reburied, only to reappear again in the garden. A woman, Ketevan Barateli (Zeinab Botsvadze), is eventually arrested and accused of digging up the corpse. She defends herself and states that Varlam does not deserve to be buried as he was responsible for a Stalin-like regime of terror responsible for the disappearance of her parents and her friends. She is put on trial and gives her testimony, with the story of Varlam's regime being told in flashbacks.

The Wishing Tree begins with a gorgeous scene, a field of roses, where an even more beautiful horse, named Tetra, is in agony. A young man, Gedya (Soso Jachvliani) rushes to his rescue, but loses the battle, and his horse dies surrounded by roses. This scene will certainly be remembered, as Abuladze will once again bring the audience back to the red roses, where in the end, only the careful viewer will understand its deep meaning. By the time Gedya finds the strength to recover from his loss, he and the entire village is stunned by the incredible beauty of a woman who has come to their town- Marita (Lika Kavjaradze). As soon as Gedya and Marita see each other, they fall in love. But their happiness won`t last forever.
