Thomas Brodie-Sangster, also credited as Thomas Sangster, is an English actor and musician, known for his role as Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones, his voice as Ferb Fletcher in Phineas and Ferb, as John Tracy in the ITV series Thunderbirds Are Go, as well as his roles as Sam in Richard Curtis's Love Actually and Newt in the 2014 film The Maze Runner, and its 2015 sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Sangster also grew in popularity for starring in critically acclaimed cult films such as Casey in Some Dogs Bite, Donald Clarke in Death of a Superhero, Samuel Brawne in Bright Star and Paul McCartney in Nowhere Boy.
On his mother's side, Sangster is a second cousin, once removed, of actor Hugh Grant, alongside whom he appeared in Love Actually; his great-grandmother, Barbara (née Randolph) Bertram, and Grant's grandmother were sisters. His great-grandfather, Anthony Bertram, was a novelist, and a maternal ancestors was politician and colonial administrator Sir Evan Nepean, through whom he has Cornish and Welsh ancestry.
Sangster plays bass and guitar, and he learned to play left-handed guitar to portray the left-handed Paul McCartney in the feature film Nowhere Boy.

Thomas Sangster was born in London; Brodie was initially his middle name. He has a sister, Ava, and is the son of actors Anastasia (née Bertram) and Mark Ernest Sangster. His father is a musician and film editor. Sangster's father's family is from Banchory, Scotland.On his mother's side, Sangster is a second cousin, once removed, of actor Hugh Grant, alongside whom he appeared in Love Actually; his great-grandmother, Barbara (née Randolph) Bertram, and Grant's grandmother were sisters. The film begins with a young boy, Thomas, taken in by Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) and troops from the organization WCKD, alongside other children, after being dropped off by his mother for his own safety. Years later, shortly after being rescued from the maze, Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and the remaining Gladers - Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Teresa Agnes (Kaya Scodelario), Frypan (Dexter Darden) and Winston (Alexander Flores) - are taken to a facility run by Mr. Janson (Aidan Gillen). He explains that the facility is a safe haven, protecting them from WCKD, the Flare virus and the Cranks, and provides them clothes, food, and sanitation, where there are other survivors of multiple mazes are also present. Thomas becomes curious about their activities and manages to find out what is really happening behind the closed doors. With help from Aris Jones (Jacob Lofland), the first maze survivor to end up in the facility, it is revealed that WCKD's leader, Ava, is still alive and that Mr. Janson is working for WCKD, as they discuss about the experiment on the Immunes and that Janson has yet to find The Right Arm, a resistance group located at the mountains. The group, including Aris, escapes the facility, as Janson orders his WCKD troops to track them down, where they find themselves in the deserted outside world - the Scorch.

A 16-year-old boy wakes up inside an underground service elevator with no memory of his identity. A group of male youths greet him in a large grassy area called the Glade that is enclosed by tall, stone walls. Every month, a new boy and supplies arrive in the elevator. The boys, who call themselves Gladers, have formed a rudimentary society with each assuming specialized tasks. Alby, their leader and the first to arrive in the Glade, says every boy eventually recalls his name, but none remember their past. The boy learns that a vast Maze surrounding the Glade may provide the only way out. During the day, designated Runners search the Maze for an escape route, returning before nightfall when the entrance closes. No one has ever survived a night inside the Maze.
