Thomas Brodie-Sangster, also credited as Thomas Sangster, is an English actor and musician, known for his role as Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones, his voice as Ferb Fletcher in Phineas and Ferb, as John Tracy in the ITV series Thunderbirds Are Go, as well as his roles as Sam in Richard Curtis's Love Actually and Newt in the 2014 film The Maze Runner, and its 2015 sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. Sangster also grew in popularity for starring in critically acclaimed cult films such as Casey in Some Dogs Bite, Donald Clarke in Death of a Superhero, Samuel Brawne in Bright Star and Paul McCartney in Nowhere Boy.
Biography
Thomas Sangster was born in London; Brodie was initially his middle name. He has a sister, Ava, and is the son of actors Anastasia (née Bertram) and Mark Ernest Sangster. His father is a musician and film editor. Sangster's father's family is from Banchory, Scotland.
On his mother's side, Sangster is a second cousin, once removed, of actor Hugh Grant, alongside whom he appeared in Love Actually; his great-grandmother, Barbara (née Randolph) Bertram, and Grant's grandmother were sisters. His great-grandfather, Anthony Bertram, was a novelist, and a maternal ancestors was politician and colonial administrator Sir Evan Nepean, through whom he has Cornish and Welsh ancestry.
Sangster plays bass and guitar, and he learned to play left-handed guitar to portray the left-handed Paul McCartney in the feature film Nowhere Boy.
