Tillotama Shome (sometimes credited as Tilotama Shome) is an award-winning Indian film actress.

Biography

Née à Calcutta en Inde, Tillotama Shome grandit en divers lieux de l'Inde alors que son père est membre de l'armée de l'air indienne. Elle suit ses études au collège Lady Shri Ram de Delhi et fait partie du groupe de théâtre Asmita de Arvind Gaur. Elle déménage à New York à l'automne 2004 pour suivre une maîtrise de théâtre à l'Université de New York. Dans cette ville, elle enseigne également le théâtre aux condamnés à mort dans une prison américaine de haute sécurité.

Elle retourne à Bombay en février 2008, ville où elle s’installe en mai 2008.

Ratna (Tillotama Shome), une jeune veuve, a quitté la campagne pour venir travailler comme domestique chez Ashwin (Vivek Gomber), un riche architecte de Bombay. Après un séjour de plusieurs années aux États-Unis, celui-ci s'apprête à se marier. Mais le mariage est annulé au dernier moment, car sa fiancée Sabina l'a trompé. Il se retrouve seul et plein d'incertitudes, entre travail sur les chantiers et retour solitaire dans son appartement. Ratna, qui habite à plein temps dans son appartement, dispose d'une petit coin de couloir en guise de chambre, où elle a installé un petit autel d'oraisons. Elle lui prépare ses repas, entretient le somptueux appartement moderne et fait preuve de discrétion et d'humilité en s'effaçant devant son employeur, issu d'une caste bien supérieure à elle. Ils s'effleurent, se frôlent, s'évitent dans les recoins de l'appartement, Ratna baissant le regard, Ashwin perdu dans sa mélancolie. Mais celui-ci contrairement à sa famille et ses amis qui ignorent, voire méprisent Ratna, est un homme respectueux. Ratna comprend et s'intéresse au désarroi sentimental d'Ashwin, qui s'ouvre peu à peu au dialogue avec elle. Leur relation va progressivement échapper au strict cadre du service.

During the Partition of India in 1947, a Sikh Punjabi named Umber Singh (Irrfan Khan) evacuates his house with his wife Mehar (Tisca Chopra) and two daughters. He is disgruntled at the fact that he does not have a son to carry on his legacy as a strong Sikh hunter. He tells his wife that he is confident the next child will be a boy, but Mehar is unsure, and fearful that if she has another girl, Umber will leave her. During the birth of their 3rd child, Umber takes the child from the womb and declares with happiness that it is a boy. When Mehar tries to check the gender, Umber tells he not to worry about it and go to sleep. She realizes the child is in fact a girl and tells Umber that they can kill her if he feels it is inauspicious to have a 3rd daughter. Umber ignores her and happily, in his own denial, declares the new child as a boy named Kanwar.

Upin, a veteran photo-journalist comes to Purulia in West Bengal to report on the violence against the poor tribal women in the impoverished region. There he comes across Gangor breast-feeding her child. He photographs her using one of the pictures for his news report. The picture triggers a backlash as she is shunned by the villagers. The policemen take her forcibly to the police station and gang rape her. In the meantime, Upin realizes his folly and haunted by the hushed-up violence travels back to Purulia to look for her. Gangor is no longer there and no one has her whereabouts. Determined to find her out Upin presses on his search and one night meets her, who has now become a prostitute. Gangor asks him to photograph her again taking off her blouse to reveals how her body was mutilated by the policemen during gang-rape. Upin runs away from her falling on the railway track and comes under the wheels of train. As the incident comes to the attention media, Gangor’s case reaches court. On the day of the hearing of her case, a group of tribal women led by activist Medha take off their blouses on the court premises to mark their protest against the police brutality.
