Le réalisateur Arthur Maria Rabenalt la découvre et la fait tourner en 1948. Après de premiers films est-allemands, elle participe ensuite à de grandes productions occidentales de tous les genres. Elle se fait connaître grâce aux séries télévisées des années 1960 Der Forellenhof et Alle meine Tiere.
Tilly Lauenstein est aussi une actrice de synchronisation. Elle est la voix germanophone de Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Simone Signoret, Lauren Bacall ou Marlene Dietrich dans des rôles anglophones.

Biography
Après sa scolarité à Bad Homburg, Tilly Lauenstein s'en va à Berlin et suit une formation de comédienne. Elle a son premier rôle au théâtre à 18 ans à Stuttgart. Elle joue dans de nombreux théâtres allemands, notamment le Staatstheater Stuttgart et le Schillertheater. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle a à nouveau un grand rôle, celui de Marie dans Woyzeck de Georg Büchner sous la direction de Wolfgang Langhoff au Deutsches Theater.Le réalisateur Arthur Maria Rabenalt la découvre et la fait tourner en 1948. A dreamy-eyed young woman, Micha (Ooms), is intent on immersing herself in the life and work of her icon, the comic actor, Buster Keaton. Micha soon finds herself in Santa Barbara at Nirvana House, a large, mostly abandoned villa. The residents are a strange group of characters that appear to inhabit lives outside of real time. Nirvana House is also the location where Keaton himself frequented over his alcohol problems and was even detained in a straitjacket in the villa. Micha shares this history in common with her idol when she is also placed in a straitjacket but manages to escape.

In the winter of 1942-43, a Jewish family leaps from a train going through Silesia. They are separated in the woods, and Leon, a local peasant who's now a farmer of some wealth, discovers the woman, Rosa, and hides her in his cellar. Leon's a middle-aged Catholic bachelor, tormented by his sexual drive. He doesn't tell Rosa he's seen signs her husband is alive, and he begs her to love him. Rosa offers herself to Leon if he'll help a local Jew in hiding who needs money. Leon pays, and love between Rosa and him does develop, but then Leon's peasant subservience and his limited empathy lead to tragedy.
