Été 1979 à Pößneck dans le District (Bezirk) de Gera en Thuringe. Les familles Strelzyk et Wetzel ont le projet audacieux de s'enfuir de la RDA à l'ouest avec une montgolfière faite maison. Mais si les conditions de vent sont parfaites, Günter Wetzel pense la chose trop dangereuse, persuadé que le ballon est trop petit pour huit personnes et son épouse Petra a peur pour leurs deux enfants. Mika passe ses vacances d'été au haras de Kaltenbach chez sa grand-mère. Il est proche de la faillite à cause de la concurrence d'un autre centre équestre : L'installation moderne menace d'attirer progressivement tous les apprentis cavaliers. Sa participation à un tournoi pourrait sauver le haras. Et ainsi elle commence à s'entraîner avec son cheval Whisper pour participer à une compétition. Ce n'est qu'avec une victoire qu'elle peut éviter la banqueroute. Au cours des préparatifs du tournoi, Whisper et Mika découvrent leur intérêt pour le sexe opposé. Pour l'étalon c'est une jument grise fugitive, pour Mika le jeune Milan, qui aide Mika à l'entraînement, après l'avoir aidé à ramener la jument grise.

High school teacher Rainer Wenger is forced to teach a class on autocracy, despite being an anarchist. When his students, third generation after the Second World War, do not believe that a dictatorship could be established in modern Germany, he starts an experiment to demonstrate how easily the masses can be manipulated. He begins by demanding that all students address him as "Herr Wenger", as opposed to Rainer, and places students with poor grades beside students with good grades—purportedly so they can learn from one another and become better as a whole. When speaking, they must stand and give short, direct answers. Wenger shows his students the effect of marching together in the same rhythm, motivating them by suggesting that they could really annoy the anarchy class, which is below them. Wenger suggests a uniform, to remove class distinction and further unite the group. Mona argues it will remove individuality, as well. Karo shows up to class without the uniform and is ostracised. The students decide they need a name, deciding on "Die Welle" (The Wave). Karo suggests another name, which ends up with one single vote cast by herself.

In 1942, Friedrich Weimer's (Max Riemelt) boxing skills earn him an appointment to a National Political Academy (NaPolA), a high school that serves as an entry to the Nazi elite. His father, a career factory worker who despises the Nazis, flatly refuses to allow Friedrich to enroll. Friedrich, who sees the school as his ticket to university and a better life, forges his father's signature on the permission form and leaves during the night. He makes his way to the town of Allenstein, where the school is located, getting a ride from passing cars or trucks when possible and walking the rest of the way. Friedrich's forged papers are overlooked when he arrives, and he is greatly impressed in his first day at Allenstein.

La dessinateur humoristique Frenzy vit à Munich, elle traverse une crise créative. Ses croquis sont plutôt pessimistes, c'est pourquoi elle demande à son rédacteur en chef de faire des reportages plus optimistes, sinon la perte du poste la menace. Maischa, la meilleure amie de Frenzy, pose un lapin à son petit ami Klaus, avec qui elle devait se rendre à une réunion pendant le week-end. Au lieu de cela, elle veut passer le week-end pour sortir et s'amuser. Toutes les deux vont à une exposition où Maisha regarde tendrement le beau Rene. Frenzy découvre plus sur Rene grâce à une amie. Donc, le lendemain, un accord se fait entre les deux femmes. Frenzy doit prendre Mark, un ami de Rene, présent à l'exposition.

Axel (played by Til Schweiger) has just been dumped by his girlfriend Doro (Katja Riemann), and needs to find a new place to live. He meets Walter (Rufus Beck), a transvestite who teaches straight men how gay men think. Walter talks Axel into joining him and some friends at a gay party afterwards, and tries to convince Axel to move in with him. At the party, Axel decides instead to move in with Walter's best friend, Norbert (Joachim Król), whose boyfriend has just left him. Later, at Axel and Doro's apartment, Norbert tries to seduce Axel while they browse old photos. Just when Norbert has shed all his clothes, Doro shows up at the door, and Axel hastily hides Norbert. Doro explains to Axel that she's expecting his child and wants to give their relationship a second chance. She is not amused to discover a naked man in the wardrobe, but Axel manages to convince her that nothing has happened. Excited about fatherhood and eager to return to Doro, Axel forgets about his new friendship with Norbert.

Ingo Hermann, plongeur dans un restaurant, a l'ordre de livrer une chaise à la Folkwang Universität. Là, il entre involontairement dans un examen d'entrée pour des études d'acteur et convainc le jury avec son apparence, sans le savoir. Avant l'école d'art dramatique, il fait la connaissance de Johannes Scheffler, qui rêve d'une carrière d'acteur, mais ce dernier est de nouveau refusé de l'école. Ingo l'accompagne à Munich, où Johannes veut postuler à l'école Otto Falckenberg. En faisant de l'auto-stop, les deux rencontrent dans une zone de desserte autoroutière, l'ambitieux Albrecht Korweiler (« Ali »), qui aspire également à une carrière d'acteur. Il rejoint les deux auto-stoppeurs. Les trois « petits requins » vivent à Munich, de divers emplois (et quelques aventures) et finalement se rejoignent pour l'examen d'entrée à l'école d'art dramatique.
