In the midst of time comes the clanging of steel against steel, and in a collision of myth and history, there is the "Vikingdom". Melanie and Max, two actors who are unknown in the USA, have ambitious expectations and want to write a script for a Hollywood blockbuster. Working for the perfect script in the home of the Swiss actress, Melanie Winiger, she and her school friend, Max Loong, also a Swiss actor, and two friends watch a hit and run from their house, and it is none other than Johnny Depp, obviously dead. What to do with such a well known body ... as to take to their change! Unintentionally taken hashish, sex, at least in their minds, philosophy, overboarding phantasies and talks, a mix of love and little violence and the everyday life behind the scenes of the glittering metropolis, Los Angeles: four immigrants and their friends demonstrate the craziness of the movie business, but also the loving and bizarre people of LA. The actors are narcissistic, the director phlegmatic and the crew on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Shooting days will be full of mishaps and in the end the corpse is given a second chance at life, almost.

In an alternate 1982, an alien ship inexplicably stops over Johannesburg. When investigation teams enter the ship, they discover a population of sick and malnourished extraterrestrials, derogatorily referred to as "prawns". The South African government confines the aliens to "District 9", a government camp that is located outside of Johannesburg. Twenty-eight years later, in 2010, following periodic conflict between the aliens and the locals living near District 9, the government hires private military company Multinational United (MNU) to relocate the aliens to a new internment. Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), an Afrikaner bureaucrat, is appointed by Piet Smit (Louis Minnaar), an MNU executive and his father-in-law, to lead the relocation.
