William Phillips (April 10, 1864 – March 10, 1943) was an American character actor known as Tully Marshall, with nearly a quarter century of theatrical experience behind before he made his first film appearance in 1914.


Sous le pseudonyme de Tully Marshall, il débute au théâtre en 1883 ; en particulier, il joue à Broadway entre 1899 et 1915, notamment dans deux pièces de Marion Fairfax (1875-1970), son épouse — plus tard scénariste —. Notons une unique expérience comme metteur en scène à Broadway, d'une pièce créée en 1915.

En 1914, il tourne son premier film et se consacre dès lors au cinéma, apparaissant dans près de 200 films américains (dont plus de la moitié sont des films muets) jusqu'en 1943, année de sa mort. Durant la période du muet, il collabore notamment, à plusieurs reprises, avec les réalisateurs D. W. Griffith (la première fois en 1916, dans Intolérance), Cecil B. DeMille et Maurice Tourneur — alors installé à Hollywood —. Parmi ses films parlants les mieux connus, citons La Piste des géants (1930) de Raoul Walsh et Boule de feu (1941) d'Howard Hawks, qu'il retrouvait pour la troisième et dernière fois.

In wartime San Francisco, chemist and blackmailer Albert Baker (Frank Ferguson) is killed by hit man Philip Raven (Alan Ladd), who recovers a stolen chemical formula. Raven is double-crossed by his employer, Willard Gates (Laird Cregar), who pays him with marked bills and reports them to the Los Angeles Police Department as stolen from his company, Nitro Chemical. Cliff Taylor (George Raft) is an ex-con who wants to go straight, but since being released from prison on parole, he finds it hard to find and hold a job due to his criminal past. Cliff's younger brother Tim (William Holden) is worried because he cannot afford to marry his girlfriend Peggy (Jane Bryan) and increasingly disillusioned about being able to make a position for himself in the world honestly. Afraid that Tim might end up leading a life of crime like himself, Cliff decides to help him find the money to settle down. He tells his family he has found a job as salesman, but in reality he gets back to ex fellow convict Charles Martin (Humphrey Bogart) and they organize a number of robberies. With the money he gets from his criminal activities, Cliff is able to buy a garage for his brother, who is now able to get married. Cliff, in the meantime, decides to quit the gang. However, after a failed robbery, Martin and his pals hide in Tim's garage. The police finds out, and Tim is taken to the police station. Cliff manages to exonerate his brother from the charges, but in exchange Tim has to identify the robbers and testify against them. Before the police can proceed to arrest Martin, Cliff meets him in his house and tells him to escape before being caught. However, Martin's pals, seeing their boss and Cliff together, understand that they are trying to escape and kill them.
