Urmila Bhatt (born in Dehradun in 1934) was a reputed actress of Hindi Cinema. She started her acting career by doing acting in Drama Theatre. She joined Sangeet Kala Academy in Rajkot as a folk dancer and singer. It was during that time that her famous Gujarati drama Jesal Toral ran to more than a thousand performances She acted in more than 75 Gujarati films and also in 15 to 20 Rajasthani movies.She had also played character roles in Hindi films for over two and a half decades(1960s to early 1990s). She had also acted in various Television Serials. She had also been honoured with numerous awards by the government of Gujarat.

Searching for work, Ram Kumar Singh (Jeetendra), comes to Bombay. But on arrival, his wallet and other belongings are stolen. He takes shelter in a taxi belonging to Rahim Khan (Dharmendra), who takes him home, provides him food-shelter as well as a taxi so that he can earn money. Rahim and Ram become close friends. One day Ram meets Reshma (Madhuri Dixit), who studies in Mithibai College and both fall in love with each other. Ram gets job and he quits his taxi driving. A fact about Rahim that he works for an underworld Don, Ratan Seth (Amrish Puri) is unknown to Ram. Rahim has also murdered a man named Niranjan Das (Satyendra Kapoor). And another fact that Ram is Deputy Commissioner of Police is unknown to Rahim. Ram also comes to know that Reshma is Rahim's sister. His friendship and love bring problems in his official duty.

Unemployed and branded a trouble-maker, Jaikishan lives a poor lifestyle in a slum-area called Asha Colony, very near Andher's Lokhandwala Complex along with his sister, Seema; mom and dad. He comes to the rescue of a homeless orphan, Mili, who suffers from a deep inferiority complex, and permits her to live with his family. Mala is the daughter of Kishanlal who works as a servant with a wealthy family. One day Mala meets with the owner of this family, who is so impressed with Mala that he asks for her hand in marriage for his fourth son, Gopal, which Kishanlal humbly accepts. As a result Mala gets married to Gopal, and moves in to their palatial home. While Mala is extremely helpful and sweet-natured, the rest of the daughter-in-laws, three of them, are quite the opposite. When bad times befall this family, the owner passes away; Gopal and Mala move out, leaving Gopal's mother at the mercy of her indifferent sons, Girdhar, Murli, Manohar, and their abusive wives who refuse to assist in any household work, virtually forcing their aged mother-in-law to all menial work, not looking after her needs, even when she becomes ill, and ultimately throwing her out of the house. Gopal gains popularity as a musician, while his brothers mortgage their family home with a moneylender. They decide to live off Gopal, and tell him that their mother has gone for a tirath-yatra (holy journey). With that out of the way, the brothers go back to their lifestyle, not really caring that their mother may be destitute, ill, and on the verge of dying.
