William C. Marshall (January 16, 1885 – April 25, 1943) was a Turkish-born American cinematographer. His career began in 1916 and ended in 1930. He served as cinematographer on the starring vehicles for such stars as Annette Kellerman, Marguerite Clark, Billie Burke, Elsie Ferguson, Wallace Reid, Rudolph Valentino and Clara Bow. He died in Los Angeles in 1943 at age 58.

Biography

Émigré aux États-Unis et naturalisé américain sous le nom de William Marshall, il devient chef opérateur et contribue ainsi à soixante-huit films américains (principalement durant la période du muet), les trois premiers sortis en 1916, dont La Fille des dieux d'Herbert Brenon (avec Annette Kellermann et Stuart Holmes). Ses deux derniers films (parlants) sortent en 1930.

Not long after the death of his first wife, Walter Fairchild becomes engaged to Florence Wendell. Florence ignores the warnings of Gilbert Gaylord, who is also interested in marrying her, that she doesn't know what she is getting herself into; that no woman will ever be able to fill the void in Fairchild's life left by the death of his wife. After they are married, Fairchild and Florence have some contention as she buys into the warnings given her by Gaylord. To appease her, they move out of the house he shared with his first wife, and allows her to furnish the new home. Sensing that he and his new wife need some time alone together to start their new lives, he sends his seven-year-old son, Walter Jr., to a boarding school in Switzerland. After Florence becomes pregnant, Fairchild is notified that is son is very ill, and will most likely not recover. Despite Florence's pleas for him not to leave her, he travels to his son's side. As he leaves, Florence tells him not to return.

The film chronicles the exploits of three Irish brothers. As described in a film magazine, Lovey Mary (Clark) is an inmate of an orphanage who runs away a little boy with whom she has become strongly attached. She finds refuge on a rainy night with Mrs. Wiggs (Carr), a mother of five who lives in a wretched settlement known as the Cabbage Patch. As described in a film magazine, during August 1914 Ruth Sherwood (Burke), an American traveling through Belgium with her parents, is left behind in Beaupre will sending a message to her fiance in Paris. She is compelled to seek shelter at the Hotel Tete d'Or as there are no more trains that day. Here she meets another American, Wilfred Ferrers. Ruth's passport is stolen by Olga Karnovitch (Bates), a Russian spy, who leaves her Russian passport in Ruth's hands. The town is invaded by Germans who are headed towards Paris, and they make the inn their headquarters. Ferrers is discovered destroying the Russian passport and is ordered to be shot at once. Ruth comes to his assistance by claiming that he is her fiance. The German officer is skeptical, and he orders that they be married at once. The ceremony is held beneath the upheld swords of the Germans, and an embarrassing night follows as the couple retire to their room. Ferrers overcomes the sentinel at their door, dons his uniform, and forces the General (Trimble) at the point of a gun to give them a pass to get through the German lines into France. In the meantime, Jack Martin (David), Ruth's fiance, arrives, but she says that he is her chauffeur. Ferrers gives Jack the pass, but Ruth refuses to leave Ferrers, having fallen in love with her "husband." The Germans receive orders to move on and as Ferrers enters the inn to urge Ruth to depart at once, he is shot by the outraged General. Ruth borrows a smock from the innkeeper and with Ferrers makes her escape across the boarder into France.
