London gangster Willie Parker (Terence Stamp) gives evidence against his criminal compatriots in return for a very generous offer from the police. Ten years later, Parker lives in comfortable retirement in Spain until four Spanish youths kidnap him and deliver him to two hit men hired by the kingpin that Parker helped put away. In the course of the kidnapping they also murder a Spanish policeman who has been assigned to guard Parker. At least three of the youths are then killed by a bomb in a briefcase handed to them by Braddock, the older of the hit men (John Hurt), pretending that it contains their payoff money.

In Britain, in the spring of 1944, Allied forces are preparing for the D-Day invasion. In Egypt in 1895, archaeologists John Banning (Cushing), his father Stephen (Felix Aylmer) and his uncle Joseph Whemple (Raymond Huntley) are searching for the tomb of Princess Ananka, the high priestess of the god Karnak. John has a broken leg and cannot accompany his father and uncle when they open the tomb (According to Cushing's Diary, he had twisted his leg before the filming, so the script was adapted to let him recover). Before they enter, an Egyptian named Mehemet Bey (George Pastell) warns them not to go in, lest they face the fatal curse against desecrators. Stephen and Joseph ignore him, and discover within the sarcophagus of Ananka. After Joseph leaves to tell John the good news, Stephen finds the Scroll of Life and reads from it. He then screams off-screen and is found in a catatonic state.

A spacecraft is viewed flying over the British countryside by several eye witnesses, including a woman who gets into an auto accident as a result. Later, a man enters a country inn very near where the sighting and auto accident took place. Acting strangely, seemingly able to read people's thoughts, he gives no name but says he needs a room. The stranger (Helmut Dantine) also asserts that he is responsible for saving the life of Susan North (Patricia Neal), the road accident victim. When he explains that he comes from the planet Venus, Arthur Walker (Derek Bond), a high-ranking government official and Susan's fiancé, calls the War Ministry. A Dr. Meinard (Cyril Luckham) later examines the stranger from Venus and observes that he seems to have no pulse.

George Potts, a plumber in a top secret government research plant, accidentally comes into possession of the plans for a revolutionary atomic weapon. As George leaves for his annual holiday, the research security team embarks on a nationwide search for the hapless 'sanitary engineer.' Meanwhile, the Russians get wind of the incident and intercept George, plying him with liquor and employment promises so that he'll hand over the plans to them. All the while, George never knows what the fuss is about: he thinks that the British and Soviet authorities are interested in his new plans for a modern plumbing system.
