Dean Corso (Johnny Depp), a New York City rare book dealer, makes his living conning people into selling him valuable antique books for a low price, and then selling them for profit. He meets with wealthy book collector Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), who has recently acquired a copy of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows by 17th-century author Aristide Torchia, one of only three copies known to exist. According to legend, the book is Torchia's adaptation of an older book written by the Devil himself and purportedly contains the means to ritualistically summon the Devil and, through him, acquire invincibility and immortality. Balkan believes two of the copies are forgeries. He hires Corso to authenticate all three copies, and acquire the legitimate copy by any means necessary.

Set in the 1920s and 1930s, the film focuses on Leonard Zelig (Woody Allen), a nondescript man who has the ability to transform his appearance to that of the people who surround him. He is first observed at a party by F. Scott Fitzgerald, who notes that Zelig related to the affluent guests in a thick, refined accent and shared their Republican sympathies, but while in the kitchen with the servants he adopted a ruder tone, and seemed to be more of a Democrat. He soon gains international fame as a "human chameleon".

Choucas, un ancien policier devenu détective privé est engagé par une vieille dame afin de retrouver sa fille aveugle, Marthe, qui a disparu. Peu après la vieille dame est assassinée. Aidé par son associé, Haymann, commissaire de police à la retraite, et sa secrétaire, Charlotte, Choucas tente de dénouer les fils d'un imbroglio où divers services de police et des trafiquants de drogue sont mêlés. Chemin faisant, Choucas subit l'agression d'un certain Pradier qu'il retrouve ensuite dans l'appartement de la victime et le tue. De retour chez lui, Choucas échappe alors au piège tendu par un dénommé commissaire Madrier. Résultat, Choucas est recherché par une bande mystérieuse et par la police nationale. Une cascade d'événements mouvementés s'ensuit. Utilisé par la police et, en particulier, par l'inspecteur principal Coccioli, resté à l'arrière-plan, Choucas, acharné à découvrir la vérité, manque d'y laisser sa vie et n'est sauvé, in extremis, que par les forces de l'ordre.

During the winter of 1943-44, Julien Quentin, a student at a Carmelite boarding school in occupied France, is returning to school from vacation. He acts tough to the students at the school, but he is actually a pampered mother's boy who still wets his bed. Saddened to be returning to the tedium of boarding school, Julien's classes seem uneventful until Père Jean, the headmaster, introduces three new pupils. Chercheurs d'or au Canada, Aldo et ses compagnons essuient une attaque de bandits le jour de la paie. It is the story of an illicit romance, set in the Swiss Alps. Connery plays Douglas, a middle-aged Scottish doctor on vacation in the Alps in 1932 with a young woman, Kate (Betsy Brantley), whom he introduces as his wife. Douglas has brought Kate to the Alps for a mountain climbing trip. Douglas and Kate are absorbed with a psychological melancholy.
