Winifred Bryson ((1892-12-20)December 20, 1892 – August 20, 1987(1987-08-20)), born Winifred Brison, was an American actress of the stage and of silent films.

Biography

She was married twice, first to actor Warner Baxter from 1918 until his death in 1951 and then to Ferdinand H. Manger. Bryson began to perform publicly in 1914, initially in the musical comedy stage, and in the drama Regeneration with Bert Lytell. Although her first film was Peer Gynt (1915), her real transition to motion pictures was in the film A Heart To Let (1921).

In all, Bryson acted in 19 films, her last being Adoration in 1928. There are drama, comedy and romantic films in her repertoire. The career of Bryson ended with the advent of talkies.

Russian prince (Antonio Moreno), upon returning from the front, sees his wife (Billie Dove) in the company of a blackguard count. Prince becomes jealous, and, later, while attempting to break into the count's home, both he and the count are knocked unconscious by the mob. The story is set in 1482 Paris, France. Quasimodo is a deaf, half-blind, hunchbacked bell-ringer of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. His master Jehan, the evil brother of the saintly archdeacon Don Claudio, prevails upon the hunchback to kidnap the fair Esmeralda, a dancing gypsy girl (and the adopted daughter of Clopin, the king of the oppressed beggars of Paris' underworld). The dashing Captain Phoebus rescues Esmeralda from Quasimodo, while Jehan abandons him and flees. At first seeking a casual romance, Phoebus becomes entranced by Esmeralda, and takes her under his wing. Quasimodo is sentenced to be lashed in the public square. After being whipped, he begs for water. Esmeralda pities him, and brings him some.

A young man by the name of Jack Standish, played by J. Warren Kerrigan, disappears on the eve of his marriage after the discovery of a financial scandal involving his father, John Standish, played by Winter Hall. In order to protect his father from public disgrace, Jack suddenly flees Boston and thus takes the fall. The young Bostonian ends up fleeing to Java and inevitably succumbs to the lure of the tropics. Months later, his fiance, Mary Rogers, played by Anna Q. Nilsson, follows him to Java in hopes of bringing him home. Once Mary finds him, she is faced with the challenge of reviving him, both mentally and physically.
