Handsome Jeronimo Rugera is hired to tutor the rich heiress, Josephe Asteron. They fall in love, yet the church forbids their relationship, and Josephe is hidden in a convent. When the church discovers she is pregnant, Josephe is sentenced to death by decapitation. Jeronimo tracks her down, yet is jailed before he can rescue her. When fate intervenes in the form of a massive earthquake, the two lovers have no idea what is in store for them. After an animated introduction about the history of extinct species (e.g. the quagga, the great auk and the dodo) it has gone to 60 countries and territories (including Turkey, Spain, Germany, Poland, Australia, Borneo, Chile, Spitzbergen, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, India, Java, USA, and Peru) on all continents and to the most famous national parks. Species like the Hamilton's frog (Leiopelma hamiltoni) or the Javan rhinoceros were filmed for the very first time. Other sequences including footage of the kakapo, the takahe, the dancing of the red-crowned cranes, the fishing Kodiak bears, the whooping crane, the Asiatic lion, the Komodo dragon, the tuatara, the indri, and the birds of paradise. In particular the filming of the whooping cranes was the result of adventurous circumstances. Because the whooping crane was among the rarest birds in the world in the early 1960s there was no permission to entry the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. Fortunately the cranes were provided with food by a plane and during that time the birds came to a wetland in the proximity of the fence. Schuhmacher and Barth planted themselves in a boat in a channel in front of the fence and were able to take some footage from a female and a chicken.

La 1 division parachutiste allemande est envoyée à Avignon. Certains soldats se blessent pendant le saut, comme le sous-officier Karl Christiansen. Il était Fähnrich et est rétrogradé pour avoir refusé d'exécuter un soldat ennemi. À l'hôpital, il se met en couple avec l'infirmière Inge qui le soigne. L'Oberleutnant Reiter a aussi des vues sur Inge. Inge et les soldats se séparent quand la division part pour Cassino. Ils doivent repousser l'offensive alliée. La position doit être maintenue aussi longtemps que possible. Toutefois l'abbaye sera épargnée. Les habitants se sont réfugiés ici, Inge, qui est partie elle aussi, leur apporte ses soins. Elle est insultée par Gina. Le père Emmanuel calme les esprits et montre à Inge les chefs-d'œuvre qui ont été mis en protection dans le monastère. Elle le signale au lieutenant-colonel Schlegel qui est consterné. Schlegel doit être rapatrié pour des raisons de santé, cependant il décide de rester sur le front. Il veut sauver les œuvres en les apportant au Vatican.

Hanna and her brother Thomas Amon live on the estate of their deceased parents. While Hanna of local veterinary and Thomas Brunner of the mayor's daughter is secretly admired and sought after, the siblings have eyes only for each other.
