Wolfgang Neuss (3 December 1923 – 5 May 1989) was a German actor and comedian. Beginning in the mid-1960s, he also became famous for his political engagement, first for the SPD, then for the extra-parliamentary opposition, APO. He died in 1989 from a longtime cancer.
At the age of 15 he went to Berlin to become a clown but was dismissed. When Germany entered into the Second World War Neuss was drafted, first to the Reich Labour Service where he was occupied with road construction. Later he was sent to the Eastern Front where he became injured and was rewarded with the Iron Cross. It was during his stays in military hospitals and, after the war during military detention that Neuss began to discover his interest in acting and for Kabarett.

The singer Caterine, owner of a bar/night club in Paris, wants to marry her boyfriend Pierre. However, at the registrar's office she finds out that she is allegedly already married to one Baron Hubert von Löwenherz, owner of a castle. A former employee had stolen Caterine's documents and married the Baron under her assumed identity — before disappearing with the family jewels. Caterine travels to the Baron's castle, where a visit by his rich uncle forces the Baron to stage a life of married harmony with Caterine as his wife. Eventually, Caterine and the Baron fall for each other, whilst Pierre finds a new romance with the castle's cook.

Dans les derniers jours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le caporal Rudi Kleinschmidt est accusé par le juge Wilhelm Schramm d'avoir volé du Scho-Ka-Kola. In the late years of the 18th century, Felix and Peter, two journeymen, are travelling across the Spessart hills to Würzburg. Scared of the bandits that plague these parts, especially after a brief encounter with them, the two are glad to find an inn in the middle of the forest. However, it turns out that they have wandered into a den of thieves. The owners are in league with the bandits, who this very night plan to abduct Franziska, the Comtesse von Sandau, who is travelling through the forest with a group including her fiancé, Baron Sperling. Their coach is waylaid by a trap and the bandits direct them to the nearby inn. The waitress warns the journeymen of impending danger and they pass on the warning to the nobles. During the night, the brigands arrive. To escape, the Comtesse switches places with Felix and, in a man's clothes, escapes with Peter. Felix (as Comtesse), Franziska's maid and the pastor are taken to the bandits' lair. The bandits send Baron Sperling on his way to carry the demand for 20,000 Gulden to Graf Sandau, Franziska's father.

The film recounts the lives of two schoolmates, Hans Boeckel and Bruno Tiches from the fictional town of Neustadt an der Nitze, against the backdrop of German history in the first half of the 20th century. It is told by a narrator (Wolfgang Neuss) who is supported by Wolfgang Müller with music. Through their presentation and discussion of events in the film these two provide a running commentary on political and social issues between the acts of the movie and link them together with explanations and songs.

La 1 division parachutiste allemande est envoyée à Avignon. Certains soldats se blessent pendant le saut, comme le sous-officier Karl Christiansen. Il était Fähnrich et est rétrogradé pour avoir refusé d'exécuter un soldat ennemi. À l'hôpital, il se met en couple avec l'infirmière Inge qui le soigne. L'Oberleutnant Reiter a aussi des vues sur Inge. Inge et les soldats se séparent quand la division part pour Cassino. Ils doivent repousser l'offensive alliée. La position doit être maintenue aussi longtemps que possible. Toutefois l'abbaye sera épargnée. Les habitants se sont réfugiés ici, Inge, qui est partie elle aussi, leur apporte ses soins. Elle est insultée par Gina. Le père Emmanuel calme les esprits et montre à Inge les chefs-d'œuvre qui ont été mis en protection dans le monastère. Elle le signale au lieutenant-colonel Schlegel qui est consterné. Schlegel doit être rapatrié pour des raisons de santé, cependant il décide de rester sur le front. Il veut sauver les œuvres en les apportant au Vatican.
