Yorgos Lanthimos (Greek: Γιώργος Λάνθιμος; born 1973) is a Greek filmmaker and theatre director.

Yorgos Lanthimos was born in Athens. He studied directing for Film and Television at the Stavrakos Film School in Athens. Through the 90's he directed a series of videos for Greek dance-theater companies. Since 1995 he has directed a large number of TV commercials, in addition to music videos, short films and experimental theater plays. He has also been a member of the creative team which designed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

His feature film career started with the mainstream film My Best Friend where he shared directing credits with mentor Lakis Lazopoulos and was followed by the experimental film Kinetta which premiered at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. His third feature film Dogtooth won the Prix Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. His fourth feature film Alps (2011) won the Osella Award for Best Screenplay (Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou) at the 68th Venice International Film Festival.
The script for his fifth film "The Lobster" was awarded with the ARTE International Award as Best CineMart Project for 2013 at the 42nd Rotterdam International Film Festival.The filming will take place in Ireland.

Biography

Il a étudié la réalisation à l’école de cinéma de Stavrakos à Athènes. Il est le mari de l'actrice française Ariane Labed qui joue dans ses films Alps et The Lobster.

En 2009, le film Canine, huis-clos aux accents de thriller sur une famille-société en Grèce, qu’il a réalisé, gagne le prix Un certain regard au festival de Cannes.

En 2015 il signe son premier film américain The Lobster, avec Colin Farrell, le film remporte le prix du jury au festival de Cannes.

En 2016, il devient membre de l'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences qui décerne les Oscars.

En 2017, son film Mise à mort du cerf sacré remporte le Prix du scénario au 70e Festival de Cannes, conjointement avec You were never really here de Lynne Ramsay ; les deux films ont en commun de présenter un personnage principal masculin qui est forcé de faire des choix cornéliens, voire sacrificiels.

En 2018, son film La Favorite est sélectionné à la Mostra de Venise où il remporte le Grand Prix, quelques mois plus tard il est nommé 9 fois aux Oscars, Olivia Colman y remporte l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice.

En 2019, il est membre du jury au Festival de Cannes sous la présidence d'Alejandro González Iñarritu.
