Klaus, a former Nazi German doctor who practiced horrific experiments with children during World War II, has continued with his sick attraction for torturing and killing young boys during his exile in a remote village in Catalonia. His latest victim is a child he has tortured and later kills with a blow to the head, taking photographs of the crime. This sadistic act has been witnessed by Angelo, another of Klaus' victims, who has spied him from a window, later stealing the tortured incriminating writings and photographs of the doctor's crimes. Klaus tries to commit suicide jumping from a tower, but he survives. As a result of his failed attempt he is now unable to breathe on his own and is immobile, confined permanently in an iron lung to survive.
Isabelle is on summer holiday with her family in the south of France. The film opens with a scene of voyeurism when Isabelle's younger brother, Victor uses binoculars from a cliff to watch his sister sunning topless on a beach. She then decides to have sex for the first time with a German boy named Felix, but the experience leaves her cold.

The film opens with a funeral for a young woman; the deceased is Dawn Wiener, the protagonist from Solondz's Welcome to the Dollhouse, who went to college, gained a lot of weight, became pregnant, and committed suicide. Her brother Mark (Matthew Faber, reprising his role) reads the eulogy while Dawn's tearful parents (Angela Pietropinto and Bill Buell) sit in the audience.

Joe (Matthew Barry) is the son of famous opera singer Caterina Silveri (Jill Clayburgh). While Joe believes that Caterina's husband, Douglas Winter (Fred Gwynne), is his biological father, the truth is that he was sired by Caterina's former lover, who is now living in Italy and working as a schoolteacher. Joe is moody and rebellious and needs a strong father figure to guide him and keep him in line, but Douglas is ineffectual and emotionally weak, and when Joe witnesses the sudden death of Douglas, it sends him over the edge. In hopes of boosting her singing career, which has fallen into a rut, Caterina decides to move to Italy with her son. There, Joe falls in with a dangerous crowd and becomes addicted to heroin.

Bored of staying in their vacation home, the two walk into town while discussing relationships and their virginity. The story is told by Sebastián (Carlos Echevarría), the sports coach who becomes the object of a student's affection. Martin (Javier De Pietro) is a 16-year-old young student who is attracted to his coach, Sebastián. Sebastián tries to keep Martin at a distance, but at the same time tries to be kind and nurturing. Martin goes to great lengths in his attempt to get close to his teacher. When Martin hurts his eye during his swimming class, Sebastián initially takes him to the hospital. After treatment, Sebastián offers Martin a ride home. However, Martin was supposed to spend the night at a friend's house, so no one is expecting him to come home that night. Martin spends the night at the Sebastián's house. Things come to a head when Sebastián realizes that he was being lied to and punches Martin in the face. He is not angry from disgust for being the object of Martin's desire, rather because Martin's dishonesty could potentially cost the coach his job. Offended, Martin taunts Sebastián, telling him to call the police and suggesting it would cause greater problems for Sebastián. Later, Martin accidentally falls off a roof after retrieving a neighbor's soccer ball, and Sebastián finds himself filled with remorse.
