Barry Levinson (born April 6, 1942) is an American screenwriter, Academy Award winning film director, actor, and producer of film and television. His most notable films include Diner, The Natural, Good Morning Vietnam, Rain Man, and Bugsy.
De retour dans sa ville natale de Baltimore, il décide de passer derrière la caméra pour Diner, pour lequel il a également écrit le scénario. Il obtient de nouveau une nomination aux Oscars. Plus tard, il dirige Robert Redford et Robert Duvall pour Le Meilleur. Barry Levinson poursuit avec Bugsy, Avalon (qu'il produit), Toys, et la série télévisée Homicide en 1993 ; mais Bugsy et Toys ne rencontrent pas le succès. C'est avec le film Harcèlement que Barry Levinson revient sur les devants de la scène en 1994.
En 1996, Barry retrouve Dustin Hoffman dans Sleepers. Ce couple n'en resta pas là puisqu'il tournèrent encore deux films ensemble : Des hommes d'influence en 1997 et Sphère en 1998. Il revient en tant que producteur pour le film sur la mafia avec Johnny Depp, Donnie Brasco. Biography
Après des études à l'American University de Washington, Barry Levinson débute dans le monde du cinéma en écrivant pour des séries télés (notamment The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine). Il s'installe alors à Los Angeles. Puis, en 1976, il croise la route de Mel Brooks. C'est une grande histoire qui est en train de s'écrire. En effet, quelques mois après, c'est La Dernière Folie réalisée par Mel Brooks, et écrite par Barry Levinson. Sortira aussi Le Grand Frisson, encore avec Mel Brooks en réalisateur, et Barry Levinson à l'écriture... Juste après, il est nommé à l'Oscar du meilleur scénario original pour Justice pour tous. Il ne décroche pas la précieuse statuette, mais en 1988, il connait enfin la victoire avec Rain Man, qui obtient un succès considérable. Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is a respected but perfectionist actor. Nobody in New York wants to hire him anymore because he is difficult to work with. According to his long-suffering agent George Fields (Sydney Pollack), Michael's attention to detail and difficult reputation led a commercial he worked on to run significantly over-schedule, because the idea of a tomato sitting down was "illogical" to him. After many months without a job, Michael hears of an opening on the soap opera Southwest General from his friend and acting student Sandy Lester (Teri Garr), who tries out for the role of a hospital administrator Emily Kimberly but does not get it. In desperation, and as a result of his agent telling him that "no one will hire you", he dresses as a woman, auditions as "Dorothy Michaels" and wins the part. Michael takes the job as a way to raise $8,000 to produce a play, written by his roommate Jeff Slater (Bill Murray) and to star Sandy, titled Return to Love Canal. Michael plays his character as a feisty, feminist administrator, which surprises the other actors and crew who expected Emily to be (as written) another swooning female in the plot. His character quickly becomes a television sensation.

Set in the northwest section of Baltimore, Maryland, during the last week of 1959, Diner tells the story of a circle of male friends – now in their early twenties – who reunite for the wedding of one of their group. The title refers to the Hilltop Diner that was located at Reisterstown Road and Rogers Avenue, Baltimore, their late-night hangout. However, the Hilltop had been converted into a liquor store, so the location in the film is in the Canton section of Baltimore. An element of the story includes the Baltimore Colts winning the 1959 NFL Championship Game. The semi-autobiographical film explores the changing relationships among these friends as they become adults through what is mostly a series of vignettes rather than a traditional narrative. Levinson encouraged improvisation among his cast to capture realistic camaraderie.

Arthur Kirkland (Al Pacino), a defense attorney in Baltimore, is in jail on a charge of contempt of court for having thrown a punch at judge Henry T.
