Ralph Thomas MC (born Ralph Philip Thomas 10 August 1915 — 17 March 2001) was an English film director, born in Hull. He is perhaps best known for directing the Doctor series of films.
His brother, Gerald Thomas, was also a film director, probably best remembered for the Carry On... film series and his son is the Academy Award-winning film producer, Jeremy Thomas.
He cast the actor James Robertson Justice in many of his films. He often worked with the producer Betty E. Box who was married to Carry On producer, Peter Rogers. He was a nephew of producer Victor Saville.
During World War II, Thomas served with the 9th Lancers rising to the rank of Major and being awarded the Military Cross.
Returning to film with the Rank Organisation, Thomas advanced from assistant editor, to making film trailers to becoming head of Rank's trailer department as well as writing films. Sydney Box had enjoyed Thomas's trailer for Miranda and when a position of director came up due to an unexpected illness, Thomas made his directoral debut in Once Upon a Dream.

Biography
Born in Hull, Thomas entered the film business as a clapper boy at Shepperton Studios in 1932 whilst studying. He soon worked in film, sound, editing and camera departments.During World War II, Thomas served with the 9th Lancers rising to the rank of Major and being awarded the Military Cross.

The Royal Navy is concerned about constant attacks on convoys by German submarines and having to keep "half the fleet" watching for the German battleship Tirpitz. When gymnastics school teacher Caroline goes on holiday at her family's home in Cornwall, she meets her distant mermaid relative Miranda, who looks exactly like her. On the eve of their visit to France the members of the Hand & Flower pub darts team gather for a drink. The day trip is being organised by one of their regulars who is a travel agent. British private detective Edward Mercer (Richard Todd) is employed to travel to Venice and locate an Italian who is to be rewarded for his assistance to Allied airmen during the Second World War. Once he arrives in Italy, however, he becomes mixed up in an assassination and a great deal of mystery. Susan Graham (Carol Marsh) is a discontented heiress whose joint guardians (Mervyn Johns and Peter Haddon) are both trying to get her married to their odious nephews (Peter Hammond and Geoffrey Sumner, respectively). On her nineteenth birthday, the five of them visit a nightclub called the Magnolia Club; also present happens to be radio star Nick Martin (David Tomlinson), whom Susan detests. When she is inadvertently seated at Martin's table directly in front of the floor show, she refuses to move, and Martin, despite his radio reputation as a fearless detective, is too intimidated by her hauteur to insist. This, however, proves to be a mixed blessing for Susan; when the evening's principal performer, a ventriloquist, comes out, she laughs so hard at his routine that she gets a bad case of the hiccups. She attempts to cure them by getting a drink of water, but succeeds only in getting caught in the crossfire of a pie fight.
