Seema Biswas (born 14 January 1965) is an Indian film and theatre actress from Assam who shot into prominence with the role of Phoolan Devi in Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen (1994). She has a reputation for performing strong character roles.
Biswas won the 1996 National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Bandit Queen. She won the 2000 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the 2006 Best Actress Genie Award for her role as Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta's Water (2005).

Biography

Seema Biswas est née à Nalbari, dans l'Assam, de Jagdish Biswas et Meera Biswas. Elle s'est fait connaître avec le rôle de Phoolan Devi dans La Reine des bandits (Bandit Queen), le film de Shekhar Kapur sorti en 1994, pour lequel elle a remporté le National Film Award de la meilleure actrice. Elle a la réputation de jouer des rôles à fort caractère. Elle a remporté le prix Sangeet Natak Akademi en 2000, et le prix Génie de la meilleure actrice pour son rôle dans le film Water de la réalisatrice Deepa Mehta. Preet is a shy young journalist visiting a convent for aged nuns in Meerut to do a story on conversions. His meeting with Sister Agatha, a Malayalee nun who manages the convent, rekindles the memories of an incident that took place in the convent way back in 1984, taking the narrative in the flashback. A young Sikh woman, Amarjeet Kaur, along with her 8-year old son Jaggi, escaping from marauding rioters seeks refuge in the convent. The nuns give them a place to hide making the mother wear nun's robes and cutting the boy's long hair to conceal their identities. The young boy gradually settles in and becomes part of the convent life giving the nuns something to look forward to in their staid daily routine. The nuns refuse to give in to constant threats from the pursuers plotting Amarjeet's and Jaggi's escape. The plot moves to and for in time to reveal how Preet makes peace with his troubled past while re-claiming the outward symbol of his identity. The film concludes showing Preet wearing a turban.

A prestigious diamond fashion show goes wrong and, inadvertently, they become embroiled in a jewellery heist.
