Yashpal Sharma is an Indian bollywood actor & theatre artist. He is best known for his role as Randhir Singh in Sudhir Mishra's 2003 Hindi movie Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, apart from Lagaan (2001), Gangaajal (2003), Ab Tak Chhappan (2004), Apaharan (2005), Singh is Kinng (2008), Arakshan (2011) and Rowdy Rathore (2012). He played Kuwar Singh in Zee's Mera Naam Karegi Roshan. Yashpal is also a stage actor and appears in live plays. He formerly starred in Zee's Neeli Chhatri Waale.

The film begins with SP Amit Kumar (Ajay Devgan) taking charge of the Tezpur District in Bihar. The area is notorious for its crime rate, with Tezpur Police under the control of local don Sadhu Yadav (Mohan Joshi) and his son Sundar Yadav (Yashpal Sharma). Amit tries to instill honesty and courage in his subordinates, but in vain. Bacha Yadav (Mukesh Tiwari), who is a stooge of Sadhu Yadav visits his hideout, sees an infamous local goon Nunwa taking shelter there. Fearing that arresting him would open the lid on the nexus between Nunwa and the Tezpur Police, he kills Nunwa and misleads Police that he was killed in an encounter. Suspect about the encounter, Amit Kumar summons Bacha Yadav, puts him off duty temporarily and also tries to keep him away from Sadhu Yadav and Sundar Yadav. Anxious that he would be transferred from Tezpur, Bacha Yadav, seeking the help of Sadhu Yadav, visits his home, where he finds out that he is being ditched by Sadhu and vows to settle score with them. Meanwhile, Sundar manhandles a Public Works Department engineer for not heeding to his word during a tendering process. Amit takes notice of the incident and also finds that a girl is missing from her home after being kidnapped by Sundar. Sensing an opportunity, Bacha Yadav urges Amit to give him one more chance, who obliges him. Bacha Yadav tricks Sundar into a factory where Amit and his men are waiting and after a brief scuffle, Sundar is arrested and produced in a local court, where the judge acquits Sundar on the account of lack of evidence against him.

The film opens at Hindu College in Delhi with the story of three students, Siddharth Tyabji (Kay Kay Menon), Geeta Rao (Chitrangada Singh) and Vikram Malhotra (Shiney Ahuja). Siddharth is a driven revolutionary who dreams of bringing a revolution in the state of Bihar that will end the caste-based discrimination there; bring social justice, and, change the society for the better. While she finds Siddharth's Naxalite rhetoric attractive, she is not sure if she can whole-heartedly subscribe to it. And every time they come to point of choice, Siddharth chooses his ideology over his love for her thus breaking her heart time and again. Vikram is a middle-class boy who dreams of making it big, whatever the cost. He is particularly afflicted by his father's Gandhian ideas, but irritated and frustrated at the same time, seeing his father's way of life as ineffective in bringing about a change.

The story revolves around a sensitive young adult named Karan (Tusshar), who frequently skips college. Despite his poor academic performance, he displays other talents. The film opens with a late-night telephone call from Patna to Yadav's (Shinde) residence that the party he works for has selected another politician for the ticket this time. The Yadav lackeys trace their master to a prostitute's abode and give him the spoiler. Yadav wastes no time and gets that politician stabbed under his supervision. When his deadliest cohort, Sudhir Vinod, stabs him in right-side in breast, Yadav rebukes him for this "mistake" and stabs the half-dead man himself on the left, telling him jokingly that heart is on the left by reciting a famous Bollywood lyric.

At the beginning of the movie, Nisha, a model, is kidnapped by Arjun Pandit's men. Arjun is madly in love with Nisha and wanted to celebrate Nisha's birthday, but she tells him that she does not like him. Then later on we go into the flashback of Arjun Dixit a peaceful, God-loving man who lived in Haridwar, India. He is a professor at a university in Haridwar. One day, Nisha comes to his town to research the Sanskrit language. Spending time with her, Arjun realizes that he is in love with her. She is also attracted to him, but sees him as a coward man because of his peaceful ways of dealing with things, like Sanjay, who is the rouge son of a woman MLA, bullies Nisha. Nisha challenges Arjun to show his manliness to Sanjay. Angered by Nisha's challenge Arjun beats Sanjay black-and-blue in public. Filled with anger, Sanjay swore vengeance on Arjun for the humiliation. Sanjay and his friends attack Arjun and Nisha while they were joyfully spending time together. Arjun fights Sanjay and his friends, Nisha then throws Arjun a sword which results in Arjun stabbing and killing Sanjay. Police arrives in a matter of time and Nisha tells the officer that Arjun has murdered Sanjay. Arjun gets arrested and this is when Nisha shows her true colors and testifies against Arjun creating a confusing situation. Nisha visits Arjun at the prison and reveals that her full name is Nisha Chopra and that she is the sister of Sangeetha Chopra. In a flashback, Arjun remembers witnessing one of his students (Sangeetha) being raped by Sanjay. He runs towards the situation to assist but is stopped by Sanjay's friends. Soon after Sanjay is done and leaves alongside his friends, Arjun quickly takes her to the hospital and goes to the police station to file a complaint, but Sanjay threatens to rape Arjun's sister if he testifies against him, persuading Arjun not to testify. Hearing that Arjun would not testify against Sanjay. Police said to Sangeetha if Arjun gives the statement, they will arrest and punish Sanjay ensuing Sangeetha getting justice, but Arjun, the eyewitness, is forced to give the inappropriate statement because of Sanjay's blackmailing. Police takes no action towards this case leaving Sangeetha burst into tears and urge to get justice. Sangeetha is then harrassed by majority of students at university. She writes a letter to her so-called sister Nisha about everything which has happened to her including that if Arjun Dixit gave the right statement, she would get justice and would be able to avoid the dirty misunderstandings of people. Lastly, she writes she will never forgive Arjun, neither should Nisha. She commits suicide after awhile. Returning back to the present, Arjun is found guilty and is imprisoned for murder, but then Sanjay's mother bails Arjun out using her influences and tells him that her son was wrong and deserved what he got. Arjun's parents and Nisha had already left the city. Knowing that, Sanjay's mother offers Arjun an accomodation, but he refuses telling that he has to go Mumbai. Arjun then goes to Mumbai in search of Nisha. While staying with his friend Shiva he meets Haldiraam, a hideous criminal who runs a powerful gang. Arjun finally finds Nisha dancing in a club, while he tried to approach her he beats up a guy who was talking things about her in a vulgar way. The guy turned out to be the brother of a powerful don Ramu Kaalia in Mumbai who is also one of Haldiraam's main rivals, taking this advantage Haldiraam kills the guy in the hospital making Arjun believe that he himself was responsible for the death. Haldiraam tells Arjun that the don will kill him, so Arjun should kill him first. Haldiraam hands Arjun a gun and tells him to go kill the don. The attempt is a failure, but this makes Arjun become a ruthless, cold-blooded criminal known as "Pandit", because of his hidden knowledge and yoga skills.

Dibyanath Chatterji, his bank-employed wife, Sujata, and youngest son, Brati, live an affluent existence in Calcutta, West Bengal, India, circa early 1970s. Sujata is a quiet, devout Hindu, religious, and compassionate woman, and Brati has finished his school and is now attending college. His parents are proud of him, and keep track of his progress. Then their world is shattered during the early hours, when they are informed by the police that Brati has been killed. Dibyanath and Sujata go to identify Brati's body, mourn, lament inconsolably. They know now that their lives will never be the same again - for by the police they will be called the mother and father of corpse No. 1084. Sujata struggles to understand Brati's passing, meets his friends one by one, comes to know that Brati had a girlfriend, Nandini Mitra, and that's when she finds out that Brati was part of a rebel group often referred to as "Naxalbari", a militant leftist group. As she delves deeper and deeper into Brati's former life, she begins to understand her son's struggle, and decides to continue to further this. What Sujata does not know is her and Dibyanath's lives are in danger, and they well turn up dead and end up as numbered corpses in a police morgue.
