Dizengoff 99 (Hebrew: דיזנגוף 99‎) is a 1979 Israeli film starring Gali Atari, Gidi Gov, Meir Suissa, and Anat Atzmon. The film, considered a cult classic, describes the way of life around Dizengoff Street and how it changed over the years. Filmed in Tel Aviv, it was released in Israel and the United States as "Dizengoff 99," and in West Germany as "Three Under the Roof" (German: Drei unter'm Dach).

Synopsis

The film is about two guys, Natti (Gidi Gov), and Moshon (Meir Suissa), and a girl Ossi (Anat Atzmon) who live together in an apartment at 99 Dizengoff Street, Nightlife center of Tel Aviv. Ossi works for an insurance company and the three of them decide to make a movie using stolen equipment. While they are making movies, they are also having numerous romantic encounters, and having a good time.

The film takes place in 1968. An army entertainment troupe (based on the Nahal troupe), perform comedy and singing acts to the Israeli soldiers in combat zones to boost morale. At the beginning of the film, three departing members of the troupe perform an old Broadway-style song. The next day, auditions, led by the director Paul Aviv (Tuvia Tzafir) are held for the three new members. The three chosen members are the forward Giora Datner (Gidi Gov), the nerdy Jerry Lewis-type Bazooka (Meir Suissa), and the beautifully talented Noa (Dafana Armoni). As part of the welcome wagon, the veteran members give the new recruits the silent treatment by playing practical jokes on them.

The movie is set in Susa, Persia (now Iran). King Xerxes holds a great feast for all the people to attend. Or shame my crown by wearing it before your drunk, and thinly veiled war council". Because of this, King Xerxes is advised to banish her and select a more worthy queen.

The film follows a Shabbat dinner party between two young families. After a dinner of superficial conversation between the adults, two teenaged boys William (Chris London) and Virgo (Dan Shaked) go to William's room. Virgo reveals to William he is gay, and William insists he is straight. Outside, their parents talk about religion, William's father exclaiming that all good Jews should marry Jewish and keep kosher. Back in William's room the sexual tension is building, and William leans in to kiss Virgo. Soon, the teenagers hear their parents calling, and they struggle to get their clothes on before being found out. William's father opens the door to the room. There's a quick cut to the families saying goodbye at the door, as William looks anxiously at his father looking sourly at the floor.
