Apothecary is a 2014 Malayalam medical thriller film directed by Madhav Ramadasan and produced by George Mathew and Baby Mathew under the banner of Arambankudiyil Cinemas. The film stars Suresh Gopi, Jayasurya, Abhirami, Meera Nandan and Asif Ali.
The film received Special Jury Mention in 45th Kerala State Film Awards for Indrans and producer Dr. George Mathew.
Synopsis
Dr. Vijay Nambiar ( Suresh Gopi ) is a skilled and renowned neurosurgeon. He lives with his wife Dr. Nalini Nambiar ( Abhirami ) and their two kids. They both work at the Apothecary Hospital. The film begins with Nambiyar being admitted to the hospital because of a motor vehicle accident. He has suffered a brain injury and his chance of survival seems slim. Subin Joseph(Jayasurya) a patient of Nambiyar, comes to visit him. Subin recounts his experience at the hospital under Nambiyar's care. The hospital is revealed to be run greedily, with patients being subjected to expensive and unnecessary tests and medicines. Nambiyar is a doctor with a good reputation, but is forced by the management to run clinical trials for new drugs. He realizes that such trials are necessary for progress, but the lack of ethical protocol and the side effects of such drugs turn the lives of the patients into a living hell. This dilemma consumes him, causing him to have hallucinations of his clinical trial patients. His soul is locked in a surreal struggle between the good and the bad actions of his work. His accident was a result of such an episode, where he falls to the road in a fit of panic. Finally, he is redeemed with the realization that his work has saved thousands, compared to the few lives destroyed by his actions. Should he live, he would go on to save even more lives. Nambiyar returns to life a changed man. He confronts the hospital board about their actions. He reminds them of the word 'Apothecary' which was used years back, to refer to doctors who treated village folk with their medicines. Stating that the hospital simply retains that name, he leaves the hospital to set up a charitable institution. His wife and several of the hospital staff and patients accompany him on his new journey.Actors

The film tells the story of Sankara Narayanan, a 55-year-old gangman from the Indian Railways. From his teenage days onward he was afraid of the strange voices that talked to him incessantly. The film is a journey through the minds of Mohanakrishnan, a fashion photographer living in Kochi. Vidyalakshmi (Mamta Mohandas), scion of a rich Hindu aristocratic family gets married to Shanavas (Asif Ali), a Muslim, against the diktats of both the families. Though, happily married, life is not a smooth ride for them. Few years passed by and the couple now has a daughter Laya, who is now in nursery. Despite strong financial troubles, Shanavas does his best to take care of his family. One rainy night, on his way to purchase mangoes for his daughter, Shanavas is killed by a group of goon, mistaking him to be someone else. Having nowhere to go, Vidyalakshmi is trying her best to take care of her daughter. But, the financial troubles forces her to cut down the daily expenses, including the school bus for her daughter. Within short time, she is asked to vacate the house, as there has been a long delay in payment of rent. Vidyalakshmi, with nowhere to go, decides to sleep on railway platform with her daughter. One fine morning, she catches an auto to drop her kid at school. Preman (Jayaram), the auto driver is a talkative and simple chap, with a sense of humor. But after travelling, she gets out of the auto and escapes without paying the cash. The next day, Preman finds her at railway station, and on demanding the auto fare, she explains her story to him, which makes him feel sympathetic to her. He brings Vidyalakshmi and her daughter to his colony. Vidyalakshmi, within short time captures the hearts of the people around. When Preman comes to know that she was doing her MBBS when got married and had to give up studies after that, he makes her to appear of final year exam. With the support of the colony residents, Vidyalakshmi appears of MBBS examination and becomes a doctor. Her daughter, one day comes in contact with the mother of Shanavas, who wants now her grand daughter to be brought to home. But Vidyalakshmi politely refuses it. The elder brother of Shanavas threatens her with the support of a Moulavi, but Preman intervenes and force them to go back. With the help of her friend, Vidhyalakkshmi gets a job in Kuwait and though not willing, she had to accept it. She leaves to Kuwait with her daughter, promising to come back soon. Preman is seen waiting at beach, looking for the next news from Vidyalakshmi.
