Difficult Years (Italian: Anni difficili) is a 1948 Italian drama film directed by Luigi Zampa and starring Umberto Spadaro, adapted from the 1946 short story Vecchio con gli stivali ("Old Man in Boots"), by the Sicilian author Vitaliano Brancati.

Synopsis

Le drame d'un modeste fonctionnaire sicilien, Aldo Piscitello, contraint, sous Mussolini, d'adhérer au fascisme pour conserver son emploi, et qui le perd réellement à la Libération. Le maire (podestà) qui le congédie pour avoir été au Parti fasciste est le même qui le força, autrefois, à s'y inscrire...

Un vieil homme, accompagné de son grand nigaud de fils, est agenouillé devant la tombe de son épouse, morte après avoir mangé des champignons empoisonnés. Au bout d'un an, ils finissent par trouver une très jolie jeune femme, sourde et muette. Pour réunir plus d'argent et améliorer leur habitation (une pauvre baraque en zone industrielle), ils organisent un faux suicide de la jeune épousée, du sommet du Colisée. Malheureusement, celle-ci glisse sur une peau de banane et meurt réellement.

The original Italian is La Viaccia (the name of the family farm which motivates the plot). The death of a wealthy patriarch in 1885 sets off an interfamily power struggle. Son Ferdinando buys out his other relatives in order to gain full control over the dead man's property. But Ferdinando's country-bumpkin nephew Amerigo holds out. Efisio is supposed to go Sardinia for killing a man whose remarks have besmirched the honour of another family. But before Efisio can comply, the targeted man gets murdered by another killer. Later his wife turns out being pregrant and it is doubted whether it is Efisio's child because he has allegedly been in Sardinia at around the time when the child was probably fathered. Efisio's honour is questioned by a local mob and he takes drastic measures to restore his reputation.
