Don't Deliver Us from Evil (original title: Mais ne nous délivrez pas du mal) is a 1971 French film directed by Joël Séria. It is loosely based on the Parker–Hulme murder case of 1954.

Synopsis

Anne de Boissy and Lore Fournier are two adolescent Angevin girls who stay at a Catholic boarding school. Both have affluent and conservative families living in the countryside and on becoming friends and later lovers, the two decide to join forces in their malicious rebellion. When Anne's parents take a long trip and leave Anne behind during summer vacation, Lore starts to stay with Anne at her château. They play some malicious games on two men: releasing the cows of the cowsherd Émile as well as setting fire to his home, and killing the pet birds of the mentally challenged gardener Léon. They store sacramental bread from church and prepare the abandoned chapel at the château for a mock marriage ceremony in which they dedicate themselves to Satan. One night, they meet a motorist who ran out of gasoline and invite him to the château. The girls seduce the man and when he attempts to rape Lore, he is killed by Anne. When a detective is sent and he finds clues linking them to the murder, the pair is convinced that the man's body will be discovered and immolate themselves at a recital while reading poems by Baudelaire.

Henri Serin (Jean-Pierre Marielle) is a middle-aged travelling umbrella salesman from Saumur who lives a sexless and unhappy married life with his puritan wife (Gisèle Grimm) and two children. Painting is the only true passion of Henri but he also has an affection for female buttocks. One night, on the roads of Brittany he hits a boar with his car. Émile (Bernard Fresson), a rude and carefree painter who lives in a cottage near Riec-sur-Belon meets Henri and invites him to stay at his house while the car is being fixed. Henri falls in love with Émile's Canadian live-in girlfriend Angela (Dolores McDonough) who draws Henri's attention with her beautiful buttocks. Henri and Angela leave Émile after a violent confrontation and move to Pont-Aven, 'the city of painters'. Angela encourages Henri to continue his life as a painter and he sees this as an opportunity to leave his earlier life behind. However, Angela soon dumps him for Émile and Henri becomes a drunkard, butt of jokes in the town, and a painter unable to sell a single painting. Marie (Jeanne Goupil), the teenage maid working at the pension Henri stays, is apparently in love with him but he seems to neglect her because his mind is too occupied with Angela. However, at a kermesse where the two sing Kenavo by Théodore Botrel, Henri faces his true feelings for Marie. He finds pure love and a pair of beautiful buttocks in her and decides to make a new start in his life. Eventually, Henri and Marie begin to live together and are seen happily selling galettes and toffee apples on a Névez beach.

A recently married young couple, Stefan (John Karlen) and Valerie (Danielle Ouimet), are on their honeymoon. They check into a grand hotel on the Ostend seafront in Belgium, intending to catch the cross-channel ferry to England, though Stefan seems oddly unenthused at the prospect of introducing his new bride to his mother. It is off-season, so the couple are alone in the hotel. Alone, that is, until the sun sets and a mysterious Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Báthory (Delphine Seyrig) arrives in a vintage Bristol driven by her "secretary" Ilona (Andrea Rau). The middle-aged concierge at the hotel swears that he saw the Countess at the same hotel when he was a little boy. The pair may have a connection to three separate gruesome murders of young girls that occurred in Bruges the previous week. On a day trip, Stefan and Valerie witness the aftermath of a fourth. At the hotel, the countess quickly becomes obsessed with the newlyweds, and the resulting interaction of the four people leads to sadism and murder. Ilona, Stefan, then the Countess all die, leaving Valerie, now transformed into a creature similar to the Countess, stalking new victims.
