Lorsque Lord Peter Wimsey, un détective amateur, se marie avec Harriet Vane, une écrivain spécialisée dans les romans policiers, ils s'engagent à abandonner le crime pour de bon. A group of lodgers - Major Rayne, Nanette and Pinkie - staying at the home of Dame Beatrice, a formerly wealthy old lady, express boredom with their humdrum lives. A chance for some excitement comes when Lily, Dame Beatrice's beautiful, young housekeeper, one day gives in to temptation and lifts a brand new mink coat from their neighbours. She does this in a misguided attempt to thank Dame Bea by replacing a moth-eaten, and thoroughly worn-out old fur. Dame Bea is at first delighted, but upon learning how Lily came by the coat she, and her lodgers, spring into action with a plan to replace the coat without anyone knowing.

Jill Trevor (Baxter) vows revenge on newspaper baron Sir Joshua Morple (Athole Stewart), who she holds responsible for ruining her father. Her very public antics to draw attention to Morple's despicable conduct come to the notice a rival newspaper, who send journalist Jim Brent (Lyon) to offer to write up Jill's story, in the hope that he will be able to dig up some dirt on Morple. Jim is initially sceptical, seeing Jill as a silly attention-seeking airhead, but as he gets to know her he changes his mind and realises there is substance to her claims, so the pair join forces to discredit Morple publicly, at the same time as starting to fall in love with each other.

The jury looks back on events that lead to profligate baronet Sir Hubert Ware being tried for murder. His brother-in-law's corpse has been found floating in Sir Hubert's garden pond. The baronet is eventually found not guilty, but upon returning home, finds his lawyer is having an affair with his wife. In the ensuing argument, and on discovering his wife loves another man, Sir Hubert confesses his guilt and then makes a suicidal leap from a balcony.

In 1770s France Doctor Manette is witness to the rape of a young woman Jeanne Defarge and the murder of her and brother Jacques by the powerful Marquis d'Evremonde.
