Add to a movie listFrancesco is a 1989 docu-drama relating in flashback St. Francis of Assisi's evolution from rich man's son to religious humanitarian and finally to full-fledged saint. The film was based on Hermann Hesse's Francis of Assisi, which director Liliana Cavani had previously filmed in 1966. It was shot in the Italian region of Abruzzo and it stars Mickey Rourke and Helena Bonham Carter. Greek composer, Vangelis, provided the musical score.
Raised as the pampered son of a merchant, Francis goes off to war, only to return with a profound horror for the society which generated such suffering. In one scene, as an act of renunciation, he strips himself of his fine clothing in front of his father, and leaves the house naked and barefoot, joining the lepers and beggars in the poor section of town. A series of episodes from Francis' life follows, rather than a coherent narrative, until his final days when he receives the stigmata, the wounds Christ suffered at the crucifixion.
The film won three awards and was nominated for a fourth. Danilo Donati won the 1989 David di Donatello Award for Best Production Design, and the 1989 Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists Silver Ribbon also for Best Production Design. Fabio Bussotti won the Syndicate's Best Supporting Actor Award. Director Liliana Cavani was nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.

In 1597 the scientist Galileo Galilei meets the philosopher Giordano Bruno, author of treatises that upset the Church for their extreme accuracy on the nature of the world. In fact the period is that of the oppressor and the Counter-Reformation and Bruno having worsened his relations with the Church, is unjustly tried and condemned to the stake. Meanwhile Galileo discovers the telescope, a gift from a friend, and perfects its potential. Thanks to it, therefore the scientist makes his first experiments on the stars and began to write his treatises. But the new Pope Urbano VIII and his beloved cardinal discover these theories, find them heretical and order the scientist to recant publicly and to allow his lyrics are declared heretics and burned at the stake.

It is 1957, 12 years after World War II. Le personnage principal, Léo, est un jeune tibétologue italien qui vient de terminer la traduction de la vie de Milarépa (Cavani avait lu le texte en traduction anglaise, qui n'avait toujours pas été faite en italien) et est impliqué dans un accident de voiture avec son professeur et son épouse. Dans la voiture détruite sur la route dans la campagne, Léo commence à raconter ce qu'il a fini de traduire. Le film se déplace ensuite vers le Tibet délibérément irréaliste et hors du temps, dans lequel la vie de Milarépa est jouée par les mêmes acteurs jouant Léo, le professeur et sa femme. Ce n'est qu'à la fin du film, la scène de retour à la voiture qui s'est écrasée que les acteurs reprennent leur rôle « occidental ».
