Synopsis

Jocelyne Khoueiry était une combattante active des milices phalangistes durant la guerre civile libanaise. A la fin de la guerre, elle se repent et se tourne vers Dieu. Jocelyne Saab rentre au Liban pour faire son portrait.

Student of Sufi poetry and belly dance in Cairo, Dunia is looking for herself and wishes to become a professional dancer. During a casting for a dance contest, she meets the illustrious and charming Dr Bechir, a Sufi thinker and writer. With him, Dunia will discover not only the pleasure of words through Sufi poetry, but also the pleasure of the senses. The documentary opens with scenes of the violence at the event, depicting fighting between protesters and Jewish students attempting to enter the venue. This is followed by an interview with student Samir Elitrosh, a leader of the Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights and the leader of anti-Israel violence who was later suspended. It also features interviews with Concordia's Hillel president Yoni Petel and Concordia rector Frederick Lowy, and concludes with a discussion of what it sees as the growing trend of anti-Israel activities on North American campuses.

Yasmine et Leïla ont vingt ans à Beyrouth, dans la ville ravagée du début des années 1990, après la guerre civile. Elles rêvent de retrouver la splendeur de leur ville. Avec sous le bras deux bobines de film, par hasard en leur possession, elles rencontrent Monsieur Farouk, collectionneur de films qui sait tout de sa ville. Le vieux monsieur va leur montrer l'histoire de la ville à partir des images filmées de Beyrouth, trouvées dans des longs métrages, des documentaires ou des reportages, venus d'Europe, du monde arabe ou d'Hollywood, croisant, au passage, Farid El Atrache, Omar Sharif, Brigitte Bardot, espions russes ou américains... En regard de la réalité de la guerre qui a détruit cette mémoire, la projection de ces films (sélectionnés parmi plus de 250) que s’approprient ces deux jeunes filles redonne à la ville un pan de son histoire, et par là aussi un peu d’espoir.
