In Papantla, Veracruz, the orphan girl Maria Antonia (María Antonieta Pons) lives with Don Anselmo (Arturo Soto Rangel), a peasant producer of vanilla and his wife Trini (Maria Gentil Arcos), who adopted her since she was very small. Arrives from the Mexico City the lawyer Esteban (Carlos López Moctezuma), son of Don Anselmo, and in the feast of the Corpus he dazzles with the beauty of María Antonia. the villain intoxicates the girl with the purpose to possess her. He returns to Mexico City and he promises to María Antonia that he come back for her when he has triumphed. Don Anselmo seriously ill and María Antonia travels to Mexico City to tell Esteban, who does not want to receive in his luxury apartment. Maria Antonia is alone and to the mercy of the dangers of the city, until she meets the young Andres (Luis Aguilar) and his friend Pizarrín (Fernando Soto "Mantequilla"), who give her asylum in their neighborhood.

The movie starts with a woman in bed sitting up and shouting in a startled voice, "My husband!" A man hops out of the bed and exits through the bedroom window. He emerges on the street of a Mexican village and heads down the street toward his horse. However, another woman comes up and starts haranguing him about his inattention to her and she ends by calling him a "cañaña" (roughly translated, "you rotten louse"). He kisses her hard, which leaves her breathless as her rides off on his horse while she again whispers "cañaña". Across the street, a wedding party is emerging from the village cathedral. Outside, the couple invites the priest to accompany them. He declines, saying that he had to go hunting with Dona Rosa (Sara Garcia). If he doesn’t' show up, she'll never speak to him again. They then invite him to their wedding reception that evening, which invitation he accepts.

In the Mexican city of Guanajuato, in the 1800s, the young and beautiful Amalia de los Robles (Dolores del Río) wakes up the passion of all the men of the region.
