Synopsis
Set in the 1940s in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, it tells the story of a young girl living in a coal mining town where the death of men from accidents in "the pit" (the mines) has become almost routine. Margaret MacNeil (Helena Bonham Carter) has already lost her father and an older brother and for her, life alone would be preferable to marrying a mine worker—that is until the charming Neil Currie (Clive Russell) shows up. Against the wishes of her hard-bitten mother (Kate Nelligan) they marry, but before long financial woes lead to his doing what every other uneducated young man does in the town: take a job underground. His death in the mine, along with her younger brother, drives Margaret to a mental breakdown and in her surreal world she decides to create a "special" museum to the memories of all those who have died as a result of the horrific mining conditions.Actors

In 1910 London, England, Kate Croy (Helena Bonham Carter) lives under the careful watch of her domineering Aunt Maude (Charlotte Rampling), who is determined that the young woman does not follow in the path of her recently deceased mother, whose dissolute husband, Lionel (Michael Gambon), squandered her wealth in order to support his opium addiction. A sinister cult uses a new television station to create a new European order. Dirk Bogarde plays a has-been UK TV personality hired to front the organisation but grows uneasy about its aims. At the end of the film, he attempts to warn the television audience about the dangers they face during the station's first transmission. But he fails to realise that recorded footage is being played during his "live" broadcast. He only realises when he is escorted from the studio by a stony-faced security guard and sees on the television monitors the (innocuous) beginning of his broadcast followed by a swift cut to his interviewer who thanks him for his contribution and then announces the showing of their first film, Back to the Future.

À l'automne 1964, la construction des 52 derniers milles du chemin de fer du Grand lac des Esclaves est en voie d'achèvement. Une bande hétéroclite de travailleurs instables, ivrognes et voleurs, est recrutée dans les tavernes par Fisk, contremaître aux poings d'acier. Martin Bishop, dix-huit ans, arrive comme nouveau pointeur au sein de cette équipe, le précédent pointeur ayant « disparu ». Bishop découvre rapidement des faits anormaux dans ce camp isolé; celui qui ne suit pas les règles de Fisk risque d'être expulsé du camp dans la nature sauvage et hostile. Fait surprenant, tous les hommes qui ont été expulsés demeurent sur la liste de paie... Le refus de Bishop de jouer le jeu de Fisk lui vaut d'être expulsé dans la forêt, dont l'immensité devient sa nouvelle prison. Incapable de s'échapper, Bishop découvre des aptitudes à la survie qu'il ne croyait pas posséder. Lorsqu'il rencontre Fisk pour une bataille décisive, la ligne qui sépare le bien du mal n'est pas aussi précise qu'on pourrait l'imaginer.
