Synopsis

Irène de Rysbergue n'a pas trouvé dans le mariage la tendresse souhaitée. Son mari est indifférent. Richard, son fils aîné, est un garçon renfermé. Seul le plus jeune témoigne de la gentillesse à sa mère. Irène fait la connaissance d'un ami de ses fils, Georges de Chambry, bel officier de spahis. Ils se plaisent et la passion les égarent. Surprise par Richard, une scène violente éclate. Révoltée, Irène abandonne les siens et fuit avec Georges en Afrique.

In a Prague ghetto, poor Jews find themselves oppressed by Emperor Rudolph II (Harry Baur) which leads to talk among the Jews of re-awakening the Golem who is being held in an attic by Rabbi Jacob (Charles Dorat). During a food riot Rudolph's mistress, the Countess Strada (Germaine Aussey), is rescued by the enamored De Trignac (Roger Cuchesne) who gets hurt in the process. De Trignac is taken to Rabbi Jacob's house by his wife Rachel (Jany Holt). When Rudolph gets engaged to his cousin Isabel of Spain, it angers Strada who charms De Trignac to steal Jacob's Golem.

In Edwardian London, Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison), a scholar of phonetics, believes that the accent and tone of one's voice determines a person's prospects in society. In Covent Garden one evening he boasts to a new acquaintance, Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White), himself an expert in phonetics, that he could teach any person to speak in a way that he could pass them off as a duke or duchess at an embassy ball. Higgins selects as an example a young flower seller, Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), who has a strong Cockney accent. Eliza's ambition is to work in a flower shop, but her thick accent makes her unsuitable. Having come from India to meet Higgins, Pickering is invited to stay with the professor. The following morning, Eliza shows up at Higgins' home, seeking lessons. Pickering is intrigued and offers to cover all expenses if the experiment should be successful.
