Synopsis
MM. Rossi et Capelli sont propriétaires d’une grande compagnie de cirque, travaillent en étroite collaboration et ont un succès considérable. Seulement ils sont rivaux pour le cœur de la dompteuse de lions Dolores. Un jour, Rossi est attaqué par l'un des lions alors qu'il se précipite pour aider sa fille Lolita, âgée de dix ans, appelée par tous Lilly. Rossi est horriblement défiguré au visage et disparaît, on pense qu'il est mort. Pour Capelli et Dolores, devenus depuis un couple, cet incident marque la fin de leur relation dans la mesure où il existe un degré de responsabilité de la mort. Afin de ne pas laisser Lilly grandir sans père, Alfredo Capelli décide d'adopter la petite fille et la regarde désormais comme sa propre fille.Actors

Le front de l'est. Wedelmann, le sympathique chef de la batterie d'artillerie, est remplacé par le capitaine Witterer, un carriériste. Vierbein, qui est encore un jeune homme doux et rêveur, est un excellent soldat, il peut prétendre à la Croix de fer. Le lieutenant-colonel von Plönnies lui propose une mission spéciale en Allemagne. Il devra aller chercher les nouvelles armes que l'officier a commandés. Le lieutenant Schulz, à qui on a refusé la permission de quitter le front, est ravi de voir Vierbein. Quand il apprend les faveurs accordés à Vierbein, il devient jaloux et va lui mettre des bâtons dans les roues. Grâce à l'aide du lieutenant-colonel qui réprimande Schulz, Vierbien peut partir accomplir sa mission. Il rend visite à la triste Lore Schulz, pour qui il joue du piano, car il préfère jouer que tirer. De retour au front, Vierbein devient le souffre-douleur de Witterer. Lors d'une attaque de chars, il s'enfuit dans un trou, par-dessus lequel passe un char russe, il se retrouve enterré vivant. Asch et Kowalski viennent voir sa fiancée Ingrid, la sœur d'Asch, pour lui annoncer sa mort et lui donner une lettre pacifiste que lit Asch. En fond, on entend Der gute Kamerad.

The movie starts in Germany 1939, in the barracks of an artillery battalion. The enlisted men of the battery are harassed by their Wachmeister Schulz and a platoon leader, Feldwebel Platzek, whenever possible. Especially Gunner Vierbein, who has a passion for music and wanted to become a piano player, is a preferred target. This intensifies when Vierbein is ordered by Schulz to carpet beating in his rooms and Schulz´s wife, Lore, starts flirting with him. Even the squad leader Unteroffizier Lindenberg, who is known to be fair and correct, starts under pressure from Schulz to pick on him. He breaks down under the constant hard drill and harassment; when he steals ammunition on a rifle range, to commit suicide, one of his comrades, Gefreiter Asch, who helps him constantly to get along with the military life, prevents this and decides that the harassment by the NCOs can´t go on.

As Francis (Friedrich Feher) sits on a bench with an older man who complains that spirits have driven him away from his family and home, a dazed woman named Jane (Lil Dagover) passes them. Francis explains she is his "fiancée" and that they have suffered a great ordeal. Most of the rest of the film is a flashback of Francis' story, which takes place in Holstenwall, a shadowy village of twisted buildings and spiraling streets. Francis and his friend Alan (Hans Heinrich von Twardowski), who are good-naturedly competing for Jane's affections, plan to visit the town fair. Meanwhile, a mysterious man named Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss) seeks a permit from the rude town clerk to present a spectacle at the fair, which features a somnambulist named Cesare (Conrad Veidt). The clerk mocks and berates Dr. Caligari, but ultimately approves the permit. That night, the clerk is found stabbed to death in his bed.

In 1940s England, Dr. Rossiter (Anton Diffring) is a plastic surgeon wanted by the police after an operation goes hideously wrong. The film opens with a sideshow barker drawing customers to visit the sideshow. A woman looks into a box to view a hidden occupant and screams. The barker explains that the horror in the box was once a beautiful and talented trapeze artist. The central story is of this conniving trapeze artist Cleopatra, who seduces and marries sideshow midget Hans after learning of his large inheritance. Cleopatra conspires with circus strongman Hercules to kill Hans and inherit his wealth. At their wedding reception, Cleopatra begins poisoning Hans' wine. Oblivious, the other "freaks" announce that they accept Cleopatra in spite of her being a "normal" outsider: they hold an initiation ceremony in which they pass a massive goblet of wine around the table while chanting, "We accept her, we accept her. One of us, one of us. Gooba-gobble, gooba-gobble". The ceremony frightens the drunken Cleopatra, who accidentally reveals that she has been having an affair with Hercules. She mocks the freaks, tosses the wine in their faces and drives them away. The humiliated Hans realizes that he's been played for a fool and rejects Cleopatra's attempts to apologize, but then he falls ill from the poison.

The film starts with a naked figure sitting in a tree in what looks like a mental asylum. Nurses come out to him, bringing a plate of conventional food and also one of a raw fish. As they try to coax him off of his perch, it is the fish that persuades him to come down. As the nurses get him to put on some overalls, the viewer sees that he has a tattoo of phoenix on his chest.
