Paolo a eu un idéal et même un métier, architecte. Mais aujourd'hui, écoeuré, insatisfait, il a tout plaqué. Il revoit le moins souvent possible son épouse, qu'il surnomme maintenant "la Hyène", et a l'impression que son chien lui est plus fidèle que ses deux enfants. Il reste désormais seul avec ses angoisses et gagne sa vie en jouant du piano et en chantant dans un bar, auprès de ses amis Aldo et Nicola,- le propriétaire, rongé par la maladie et l'alcool. C'est là qu'un soir il tombe en arrêt devant la sculpturale Francesca, tout juste rescapée d'une aventure éprouvante avec un jeune gourou qui n'avait pas encore atteint le stade de l'abstinence sexuelle. Paolo et Francesca partent ensemble vivre au bord de la mer une aventure amoureuse torride, ce qui exacerbe les pulsions du jeune homme : après que Francesca ait pratiqué sur lui une habile manipulation, il se retrouve victime d'une érection permanente.

L'Audience suit le parcours d’un jeune homme catholique, Amedeo (Enzo Janacci), qui a quitté sa ville natale, dans le nord de l’Italie, pour venir à Rome, avec une idée fixe : obtenir une audience privée du pape Paul VI à qui il a des révélations très importantes à faire. La détermination d’Amedeo est telle qu’elle apparaît suspecte aux autorités du Vatican. Puisqu’il ne veut pas renoncer à son audience, on le fait surveiller par un policier, Aureliano Diaz (Ugo Tognazzi). Puis on le met entre les mains d’une prostituée, Aïché (Claudia Cardinale), censée lui tirer les vers du nez, mais qui s’attache à lui et entreprend de l’aider dans ses démarches. Elle le met en rapport avec un politicien d’extrême droite, le prince Donati (Vittorio Gassman), qui le recommande à Monseigneur Amerin (Michel Piccoli), un prêtre moderne. Mais c’est à un père Jésuite (Alain Cuny), rencontré au cours d’un dîner, qu’Amedeo dira, en secret, son message au Pape : le prêtre paraît bouleversé par son contenu.

Roberto (Roberto Benigni) n’est pas un instituteur ordinaire. De son physique, c’est une sorte de « Pierrot lunaire » ; il est plutôt idéaliste et va s’occuper d’une classe de maternelle à Corticella, dans la banlieue de Bologne, de façon assez originale et révolutionnaire. D’abord, il est le premier homme à prendre service dans l'école de Corticella, s'agissant d'une profession traditionnellement réservée aux femmes. Ensuite, il est convaincu de la nécessité de transformer la pédagogie traditionnelle et va s’y employer avec les petits de la classe maternelle dont il a la charge. Avec l’aide de Luca (Luca Levi), un handicapé, il se livre à des expériences pédagogiques dont il attend la preuve que, ni l’école ni la société, ne sont conçues pour l’épanouissement des enfants. Par exemple, il emmène un jour ses élèves à l’usine où travaillent leurs papas : les bambins bouleversent la mécanique bien huilée mise en place par les adultes. Et pour garder intacte leur spontanéité de jeunes êtres encore instinctifs, il préfère les mettre en rapport avec les animaux : il introduit un âne dans la classe.

The film follows the meandering (sexual) adventures of the poet and drunk, Charles Serking, laying bare the sleaze of life in the less reputable neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Serking's life takes a turn for the better when he meets Cass, a young hooker with self destructive habits. They have a stormy relationship. When Serking gets an offer from a major publishing house, Cass tries to stop him from leaving, but fails. Serking gives in to the temptation of the big bucks, but soon realises his mistake and returns to LA only to find that Cass has killed herself in his absence. Devastated he hits the bottle in a nightmarish drinking bout, but finally reaches catharsis and returns to the seaside guesthouse where he spent his happiest moments with Cass. Here he rekindles his poetry with the aid of a young admirer in one of Ferreri's trademark beach scenes.
