It stars Regina Bianchi, Aldo Giuffrè, Lea Massari, Jean Sorel, Franco Sportelli, Charles Belmont, Gian Maria Volonté and Frank Wolff.
The film won the Nastro d'Argento for Best Director, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Writing Original Screenplay, and a BAFTA Award for Best Film. At the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival in 1963, the film was awarded with the FIPRESCI Prize.
Synopsis
During World War II, the people of Naples are forced to work in slave camps by the occupying Germans. They grow tired of the oppression, and revolt against the invaders, armed with any weapon they can find. The revolt lasts four days, and they eventually drive the Germans from the city before the arrival of allied troops, advancing from the Salerno beach head.Actors

Rome, 8 septembre 1943 : Danilo, étudiant à l'université, échappe à l'enrôlement pendant que son ami Michele, un jeune comptable craintif, qui était déjà dans un train en direction du Nord avec d'autres employés de son ministère, parvient à retourner à Rome, où il a laissé sa fiancée Ida. Vaincu par la peur, toutefois, il se joint à Danilo pour chercher à dépasser la Ligne gothique. Par hasard, ils font la connaissance de Gino (Tomás Milián), qui se joint à eux quand le tramway des Châteaux sur lequel ils voyagent est arrêté par les Allemands. Tous les trois se réfugient dans une cave où se cache un groupe de soldats déserteurs, commandés par Orlando (Renato Salvatori). Ils sont ensuite rejoints par le partisan Edoardo (Romolo Valli), qui leur donne la charge de faire sauter un pont utilisé pour ravitailler les troupes allemandes. Le groupe se procure l'explosif nécessaire au sabotage mais se disperse en apprenant la capture d'Edoardo par les Allemands. Danilo, Michele et Gino retournent à Rome, où ils apprennent la mort d'Edoardo, qui a confié à ses camarades le soin d'accomplir le sabotage. Profondément mûris, les trois jeunes protagonistes décident de mener à terme la mission : ayant rejoint Orlando, ils réussiront à faire sauter le pont. Dans l'opération, Michele perdra la vie, rachetant par un geste de véritable héros une vie vécue dans la terreur.

Carlo Levi was a painter and writer, but he also had a degree in medicine. Arrested in 1935 by Mussolini's regime for his anti-Fascist activities, he was sent to live in a remote town in southern Italy, in the region of Lucania which is known today as Basilicata. En 1944, alors que les troupes allemandes se retirent vers le nord de la Grèce, Athènes est l'enjeu de rivalités entre factions rivales. A recently promoted police inspector (Gian Maria Volonté) kills his mistress (Florinda Bolkan), and then covers up his involvement in the crime. He insinuates himself into the investigation, planting clues to steer his subordinate officers toward a series of other suspects, including the woman's gay husband and a student radical. He then exonerates the other suspects and leads the investigators toward him, in order to prove that he is "above suspicion" and can get away with anything, even while being investigated. In the end, he confesses to the crime in front of his superiors - who refuse to believe him. Sure that he is safe, he recants his confession, and receives the approval of the police commissioner.
