The Garden of Eden is a 1928 silent film starring Corinne Griffith. It was adapted from Avery Hopwood's short-lived stage production.

A print is preserved in the Library of Congress collection. Also prints held by George Eastman House, UCLA Film and Tv and Filmoteca De Catalunya, Barcelona.

Synopsis

A Viennese ingénue named Toni LeBrun, Corinne Griffith, is determined not to be content in her current life, staying with her aunt and uncle and working in their pretzel bakery. The young girl earns a correspondence course degree as an opera singer and dreams of fame on the stage. She decides to leave her small town life, traveling to Budapest to answer an ad from the Palais de Paris. However, the ad was a sham, a way to get girls for cheap stage shows and more, for its wealthier clientele.

Small-town pitcher Thomas Kelly (Thomas Meighan) is sent to Spring training with a minor league baseball team in Florida, but is fired by its jealous manager, Joe Cooley (Jack W. Johnston). Burglars Molly Brian (Marie Prevost) and Joe Hagney (John Patrick) break into the Vickers mansion on Long Island and loot the safe but are caught in the act by another crook, Jerry Winters (Clive Brook), who takes the money from them. The three are confronted by Pious Joe McDowell (Claude Gillingwater) and his wife Mamie (Mathilde Brundage), also crooks, but who assert themselves as friends of the Vickers family. The film is set during final days of Czarist Russia and revolves around a peasant who rises through the ranks of the Russian army ending up a Lieutenant. Peter Perrie est atteint d'un mal incurable en phase terminale et rêve de finir ses jours aux États-Unis. Dans le train Judy séduit O'Hara et réussit sa mission : O'Hara est gardé prisonnier par Chang, au grand désespoir de Judy qui est réellement tombée amoureuse d'O'Hara. Ce dernier s'évade, retrouve Judy à son hôtel, et veut lui faire avouer où est caché l'argent, mais elle refuse, car son père convoite le butin. Peter Perrie intervient et meurt à la suite d'un échange de coups de feu. Le général Wang surgit et fait prisonnier O'Hara, Judy, Wu, et un maître chanteur ; il les emmène sur son bateau. Judy propose alors de se sacrifier contre la promesse que les autres prisonniers seront délivrés ; mais entre-temps, Brighton, qui était retenu à fond de cale, se réveille de son ivresse en provoquant un tel chahut que Yang se déplace, recevant un coup de couteau mortel dans la confusion. Yang mourant veut faire exécuter tout le monde : il commence par le maître chanteur, mais O'Hara le dissuade de continuer lui expliquant que dans ces conditions tout le monde oubliera le grand général Yang. Ce dernier avant de succomber demande alors à sa garde de s’entre-tuer.
