Quasimodo

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (to Frollo) I'm sorry, master. I will never disobey you again.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (first meeting Phoebus) No soldiers! Sanctuary! Get out!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (seeing Esmeralda about to be executed by Frollo) NOOOOO!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (upon rescuing Esmeralda from her grave) Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Sanctuary!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (confronting Frollo for his lies) No! You listen. All my life, you've told me the world is a dark, cruel place. But now I see that the only thing dark and cruel about it is people like you!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (as he is being humiliated by the crowd during the festival) Master! Master, please! Help me!

Esmeralda

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Are you always this charming, or am I just lucky? (to Phoebus, after he cuts her off when she attempted to curse at him.)

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Funny, I was going to say the same thing about you! (While fighting Phoebus)

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Hmm... let's see...one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine...so there's ten of you and one of me. What's a poor girl to do?

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (to Quasimodo, telling him that though she has sanctuary in Notre Dame, she doesn't have freedom, which is what she desires.) Gypsies don't do well inside stone walls.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] I ask for nothing, I can get by, but I know so many less lucky than I. Please help my people, the poor and downtrod. I thought we all were the children of God. God, help the outcasts, children of God.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook You mistreat this poor boy the same way you mistreat my people. You speak of justice, yet you are cruel to those most in need of your help. (to Frollo, pointing out his abuse of power.)

Facebook Share this quote on facebook (when Frollo said to her "Silence!") Justice!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [furiously, to Frollo] I know what you were imagining!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [to Quasimodo, unaware it's his actual face] By the way, great mask!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Wow, you're quite an acrobat!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook How could such a cruel man have raised someone like you?

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [when witnessing Quasimodo being scolded and scared away by a parishioner] Wait! I want to talk to you.

Frollo

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] Even this foul creature may yet prove one day to be...of use to me.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [after Quasimodo's mother falls off the cliff to her death and the boulder crushes her body] A baby? [gasps] A monster!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook I am a public official; I must go. But I don't enjoy a moment! Thieves and cutpurses, the dregs of humankind, all mixed together in a shallow, drunken stupor.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Ease up. Wait between lashes. Otherwise the old sting will dull him to the new.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Oh, my dear Quasimodo, you don't know what it's like out there. I do. I do...

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] The world is cruel, the world is wicked. It's I alone whom you can trust in this whole city. I am your only friend...

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] It's not my fault if in God's plan, He made the devil so much stronger than a man!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook I'll find her. I'll find her if I have to burn down all of Paris! [singing] Hellfire! Dark fire! Now, gypsy, it's your turn. Choose me or your pyre. Be mine or you'll explode! [Kyrie Eleison] God have mercy on her. [Kyrie Eleison] God have mercy on me. [Kyrie Eleison] But she will be mine or she'll... ex-... plode!!!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook The gypsies live outside the normal order. Their heathen ways inflame the people's lowest instincts, and they must be stopped.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Such a clever witch. So typical of your kind to twist the truth; to cloud the mind with unholy thoughts!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook YOU IDIOT! That wasn't kindness, it was cunning! She's a gypsy! Gypsies are not capable of real love! Think, boy! Think of your mother!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook The sentence for insubordination is death. Such a pity. You threw away a promising career.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook What?! I'm to be settled with this misshapen...? Very well. But let him live with you, in your church.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [To Quasimodo] I know where her hideout is and tomorrow at dawn, I attack with a thousand men. (grins evilly as he leaves)

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Oh my dear, Quasimodo. You don't know what it's like out there. I do, I do.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook The bell tower, perhaps. And who knows? Our Lord works in mysterious ways.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook The time has come, gypsy. You stand upon the brink of the abyss. Yet even now it is not too late. I can save you from the flames of this world, and the next. Choose me, or the fire.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [carrying out Esmerelda's execution] For justice, for Paris, and for her own salvation, it is my sacred duty to send this unholy demon back where she belongs!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [reveals he killed Quasimodo's mom] I should have known you'd risk your life to save that gypsy witch...just as your own mother died trying to save you.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook And he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit! [his last words, before falling off the Cathedral to his death]

Facebook Share this quote on facebook This is an unholy demon. I'm sending it back to Hell, where it belongs.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [to Quasimodo] I think...you're hiding something.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [Archdeacon: Frollo, have you gone mad?! I will not tolerate this assault on the House of God!] Silence, you old fool! [throws the Archdeacon down the stairs] The Hunchback and I have unfinished business to attend to. And this time, you will not interfere.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook After twenty years of searching, the Court of Miracles is mine at last!

Clopin

Facebook Share this quote on facebook It is a tale, a tale of a man, and a monster...

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] Now here is a riddle to guess if you can, sing the bells of Notre Dame: What makes a monster and what makes a man?

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] Justice is swift in the court of miracles/I am the lawyer and judge, all in one!/We like to get the trial over with quickly because it's the sentence that's really the fun! [spoken] Any last words? [Phoebus and Quasimodo muffle in protest] That's what they all say.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Well well well. What have we here?

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [referring to Notre Dame's bells] Listen. They're beautiful, no? So many colors of sounds, so many changing moods. Because you know, they don't ring all by themselves.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] It's the day we do the things that we deplore/On the other three-hundred and sixty-four!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [pointing dramatically at Quasimodo and Phoebus] Don't interrupt me! You're very clever to have found our hideaway. Unfortunately, you won't live to tell the tale.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook And Frollo gave the child a cruel name. A name that means half-formed. Quasimodo.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Ladies and Gentlemen, don't panic! We asked for the ugliest face in Paris, and here it is! Quasimodo, the hunchback of Notre Dame!

Phoebus

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Hmm? Uh-uh. You leave town for a couple of decades and they change everything.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook I was summoned from the wars to capture fortune-tellers and palm-readers?

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [to Esmeralda] Permit me, I'm Phoebus. It means "Sun god".

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [To Quasimodo] Oh, and one more thing. Tell Esmeralda she's very lucky...to have a friend like you.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [to Frollo, when he is told to explode a miller's house] With all due respect, sir, I was not trained to murder the innocent.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [as Esmeralda pours wine on his wound] Aaaaagh! Yes! Mmmm. Feels like a 1470 burgundy. Not a good year.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [to Quasimodo, when he refuses to leave the bell tower and warn Esmeralda] She stood up for you! You've got a funny way of showing gratitude. Well, I'm not gonna sit by and watch Frollo massacre innocent people. You do what you think is right.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Citizens of Paris! Frollo has persecuted our people, ransacked our city - and now he has declared war on Notre Dame herself! Will we allow it?

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [repeated lines] Achilles, sit.

Archdeacon

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] See there the innocent blood you have spilt on the steps of Notre Dame.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [to Esmeralda] Don't worry. Minister Frollo learned years ago to respect the sanctity of the Church.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [singing] You can lie to yourself and your minions, you can claim that you haven't a qualm, but you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes, the very eyes of Notre Dame!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Frollo! Have you gone mad?! I will not tolerate this assault on the house of God!

Dialogue

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Clopin: Who is this creature?
Puppet: Who?
Clopin: What is he?
Puppet: What?
Clopin: How did he come to be there?
Puppet: How?
Clopin: [hits the puppet with a stick] Hush!
Puppet: Ow.
Clopin: [to children] Clopin will tell you a tale. A tale of a man...and a monster.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Hugo: Hey, Quasi, what's going on out there? A fight? A flogging?
Victor: A festival.
Hugo: You mean the Feast of Fools?
Quasimodo: Uh-huh.
Hugo: All right, all right! Pour the wine and cut the cheese.
Victor: It is a treat to watch the colorful pageantry of the simple peasant folk.
Hugo: Boy, nothin' like balcony seats for watching the ol' F.O.F.
Quasimodo: Yeah, watching. [Quasimodo leaves, downcast]
Hugo: Oh, look. A mime. [Hugo prepares to spit on the mime, Victor stops him and Hugo swallows]

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Frollo: Dear boy, whomever were you talking to?
Quasimodo: My...friends.
Frollo: I see. And what are your friends made of, Quasimodo?
Quasimodo: Stone.
Frollo: Can stone talk?
Quasimodo: No, it can't.
Frollo: That's right. You're a smart lad.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [Referring to Esmeralda, who's dancing at the festival.]
Frollo: Look at that disgusting display.
Phoebus: [smitten by Esmeralda's beauty] Yes, sir!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Phoebus: I was summoned from the wars to capture fortune-tellers and palm-readers?
Frollo: Oh, the real war, Captain, is what you see before you. For twenty years, I have been taking care of the gypsies, one...by...one. [On each of the last three words, Frollo crushes one of three ants on a tile.] And yet, for all of my success, they have thrived. [He flips the tile over, revealing scores of ants scurrying around underneath.] I believe they have a safe haven, within the walls of this very city. A nest, if you will. They call it the Court of Miracles.
Phoebus: What are we going to do about it, sir? [Frollo slams the tile back down upside down, crushing the remainder of the ants.] You make your point perfectly clear, sir.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Oafish Guard: You think he's ugly now? Watch this! [Throws a tomato at Quasimodo's face, everyone gasps] Now that's ugly!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Frollo: You! [Points at Esmeralda] Gypsy girl! Get down at once!
Esmeralda: Yes, your honor. Just as soon as I free this poor creature.
Frollo: I forbid it! [Esmeralda pulls out a knife and cuts the rope tying Quasimodo to the wheel] How dare you defy me?
Esmeralda You mistreat this poor boy the same way you mistreat my people! You speak of justice that you were called You speak of justice, yet you are cruel to those most in need of your help!
Frollo: Silence!
Esmeralda: JUSTICE!
[Everyone gasps]
Frollo: Mark my words, Gypsy; You will pay for this insolence.
Esmeralda: Then it appears we've crowned the wrong fool. [picks up King of Fools' crown] The only fool I see is you! [throws it at Frollo's feet; Djali raspberries Frollo]
Frollo: [to Phoebus] Captain Phoebus, arrest her.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [Esmeralda opens the church door to see soldiers outside.]
Solder: Frollo's orders: Post a guard at every door.
[Esmeralda slams the door in anger.]
Esmeralda: Don't worry, Djali. If Frollo thinks he can keep us here, he's wrong.
Archdeacon: Don't act rashly, my child. You created...quite a stir at the festival. It would be unwise to arouse Frollo's anger further.
Esmeralda: You saw what he did out there; letting the crowd torture that poor boy. I thought if just one person could stand up to him, then-- [sighs] What do they have against people who are different, anyway?
Archdeacon: You can't right all of the wrongs of this world by yourself.
Esmeralda: Well, no one out there is going to help me. That's for sure.
Archdeacon: Well, perhaps there's someone in here who can.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Victor: You mustn't run too fast, or she'll get away.
Quasimodo: I know, uh, that's what I...
Hugo: Just give her some slack, then reel her in! Then give her some slack, then reel her in! Then give her some slack-- [Laverne hits him on the head]
Laverne: Knock it off, Hugo! She's a girl, not a mackerel.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Esmeralda: [to Quasimodo] And a Gypsy. And maybe Frollo's wrong about the both of us.
[Unbeknownst to them, the gargoyles are eavesdropping.]
Hugo: What did she say?
Laverne: Frollo's nose is long and wears a truss.
Hugo: Ha! Told ya! Pay up!
Victor: Oh, dear. [Gives Hugo a coin]
Hugo: Chump.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [Quasimodo had just driven Phoebus out of the Cathedral.]
Hugo: Hey-hey! There he is! [the gargoyles applaud and cheer Quasimodo]
Victor: É bellissimo! You ejected that tin-plated buffoon with great panache!
Hugo: The nerve of him! Snoopin' around here tryin' to steal your girl.
Quasimodo: My girl?
Laverne: Esmeralda. Dark hair, works with a goat. Remember?
Hugo: Boy, I do. Way to go, lover boy!
Quasimodo: [chuckles] "Lover boy"? Oh, no, no.
Laverne: Oh, don't be so modest.
Quasimodo: Look, I appreciate what you're all trying to do. But let's not fool ourselves. "Ugliest face in all Paris," remember? I don't think I'm her type.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Phoebus: Good morning, sir. [notices Frollo looking a little pale] Are you feeling all right?
Frollo: [after seeing visions of Esmeralda in his fire all night] I had a little...trouble with the fireplace.
Phoebus: I see. Your orders, sir?
Frollo: Find the Gypsy girl!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [Frollo has barred a miller and his family inside their home]
Frollo: Burn it.
Phoebus: [shocked and angrily] What?
Frollo: Until it smolders. [holds torch] These people are traitors and must be made examples of.
Phoebus: [takes torch] With all due respect sir, I was not trained to murder the innocent.
Frollo: But you were trained to follow orders. [Phoebus douses a flaming torch in a barrel of water] [angrily] Insolent coward.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [Paris is in flames while Frollo and the guards are searching for Esmeralda. In the bell tower, Victor and Laverne are upset, looking out.]
Laverne: Oh, it doesn't look good.
Victor: It's hopeless. Absolutely hopeless.
Hugo: [playing cards with a pigeon, not paying attention] You're telling me! I'm losing to a bird!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Laverne: [to Quasimodo] We always said you were the cute one.
Hugo: [stuffing his mouth with cheese and bread] I thought I was the cute one!
Laverne: No, you're the fat, stupid one with the big mouth!
Hugo: [looks confused, still with his mouth full] What're you sayin', exactly?

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Phoebus: [weakly] Esmeralda?
Esmeralda: Shh. Shh. Shh. You'll hide here until you're strong enough to move. [takes out a bottle of wine]
Phoebus: Great. I could use a drink. [Esmeralda carefully pours it over his wound] Agh! Yes, hmmm. Feels like a 1470 Burgundy. Not a good year.
Esmeralda: [starts stitching up Phoebus' wound] That family owes you their lives. You've got to be either the single bravest soldier I've ever seen or the craziest.
Phoebus: Ex-soldier, remember? [winces in pain] Why is it, whenever we meet, I end up bleeding?
Esmeralda: [finishes up] You're lucky. That arrow almost pierced your heart.
Phoebus: [holds her hand] I'm not so sure it didn't.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Quasimodo: Is this the Court of Miracles?
Phoebus: Offhand, I'd say it's the Court of Ankle-Deep Sewage. Cheerful place. [chuckles] Kinda makes ya wish ya got out more often eh, Quasi?
Quasimodo: Not me. I just want to warn Esmeralda and get back to the bell tower before I get in more trouble.
Phoebus: Speaking of trouble, we should have run into some by now.
Quasimodo: What do you mean?
Phoebus: You know, a guard, a booby trap. [his torch is blown out] Or an ambush.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Esmeralda: [stopping Clopin as he is about to hang Quasimodo and Phoebus, thinking they're Frollo's spies] STOP!
Quasimodo and Phoebus: [muffled] Esmeralda!
Esmeralda: [untying Quasimodo and Pheobus] These men aren't spies, they're our friends!
Clopin: [confused] Why didn't they say so?
Quasimodo and Phoebus: We did say so!
Esmeralda: This is the soldier who saved the miller's family, and Quasimodo helped me escape the cathedral.
Phoebus: We came to warn you! Frollo's coming! He says he know where you're hiding, and he's attacking at dawn with a thousand men!
Esmeralda: Then let's waste no time. We must leave immediately. [the Gypsies hurry to escape] You took a terrible risk coming here. It may not exactly show, but we're grateful.
Phoebus: [sees Quasimodo sad seeing Esmeralda hug Phoebus: to Esmeralda] Don't thank me, thank Quasimodo. Without his help, we would never have found out way here.
Frollo: [off-screen] Nor would I.

Facebook Share this quote on facebook Frollo: [To Esmeralda] The time has come, gypsy. You stand upon the brink of the abyss. Yet even now, it is not too late. I can save you from the flames of this world, and the next. Choose me, or the fire. [she spits in his face in refusal] The Gypsy, Esmeralda, has refused to recant. This evil witch has put the soul every citizen in Paris in awful jeopardy.
[Quasimodo is chained up, and the gargoyles are trying to snap him out of his depression]
Hugo: Come on, Quasi, snap out of it.
Victor: Your friends are down there.
Quasimodo: It's all my fault.
Laverne: Ya gotta break these chains!
Quasimodo: I can't. I tried. What difference would it make?
Victor: But you can't let Frollo win.
Quasimodo: He already has.
Hugo: So you're-- You're givin' up? That's it?
Laverne: These chains aren't what's holdin' you back, Quasimodo.
Quasimodo: Leave me alone.
[All the gargoyles are shocked, and they slowly begin to stone-walk away]
Hugo: Okay. Okay, Quasi. We'll leave ya alone.
Victor: After all, we're only made out of stone.
Laverne: We just thought maybe you were made of something stronger.
[The gargoyles then turn to stone, leaving Quasimodo with the line "Made of something stronger."]
Frollo: For justice, for Paris, and for her own salvation, it is my sacred duty to send this unholy demon back where she belongs! [lights the pyre and the crowd yells in protest against having Esmeralda die in fire]
Quasimodo: [bellowing] NOOOOOOOOOO!

Facebook Share this quote on facebook [last line, after closing credits end]
Hugo: Good night, everybody! Whoo-hoo-hoo!
