Wu Fei (Leon Lai) et son oncle Ping parcourent les routes en vendant des briques. Ils se retrouvent chez Ling (Michelle Reis) pour livrer des briques pour la tombe de son maître récemment décédé, qui était de son vivant le chef d'une secte d'empoisonneurs et, à ce titre, était en possession d'un précieux manuel médical. The young Chor Lau-heung learns martial arts from Tuk-ku Kau-pai and has attained a high level of skill. His teacher sends him to Shaolin Monastery to attend a contest that is held once every ten years. On the journey, Chor meets Wu Tit-fa and Chung-yuen Yat-dim-hung. When Chor arrives at Shaolin, he fights with a Shaolin student called Mo-fa but neither of them is able to defeat each other. They decide to have a match again on another day. One night, Chor meets Mo-fa and strike up a conversation with her. Both of them decide to enter the palace in search of adventure. Zhang Wuji and his parents return from an isolated island and travel to Mount Wudang to celebrate his grandteacher Zhang Sanfeng's 100th birthday. Every 18 years, the martial artists' community hold a martial arts contest to elect a new leader. Eva Palace's ruler wins the title and is tasked with eliminating the Ten Villains, who live in the Villains' Valley, a sanctuary for criminals. Yin Nam-tin (Eva Palace ruler's husband) believes that the villains are innocent and attempts to stop his wife from killing them. The couple turn against each other and Yin eventually manages to defeat his wife, but becomes paralyzed and mute. Eva accepts a girl called More as her disciple and intends to groom her as her successor. Meanwhile, the Ten Villains accept Yin's son (Fishy) as their student and plan to "nurture" him to become the greatest villain ever. 18 years later, the grown-up Fishy coincidentally meets More and falls in love with her. When he participates in the contest later, he is shocked to discover that Eva is actually his mother, and More is in fact Eva's student.

Bien sûr, deux (jouées par Lin) des trois jeunes filles sont des jumelles, un mal un bon. L'autre, joué par Gong Li, est follement amoureux / obsédé (mais pas d'une manière lesbienne) de la bonne demoiselle des jumelles, et souhaite se réunir avec elle, mais le frère ne voulait pas la laisser.
