Synopsis
En 1937, les Grandclément, un couple de petits fonctionnaires, achètent et s'installent dans une maison située à Neuvy (parfois appelé Neuvy-lès-Moulins), dans ce qui deviendra en 1940 la zone libre, mais toute proche de la rivière Allier et de la ligne de démarcation. Amateurs de bonne chère, ils jouissent d'un large stock de produits gastronomiques. Mais voulant faire plaisir à son chef de service et à la femme de celui-ci, ils sont dénoncés pour avoir mangé une oie le 11 novembre. Incarcérés, ils rencontrent Marie Müller, visiteuse de prison, qui les fait libérer. Celle-ci a flairé l'aubaine : un couple sans famille, sans amis, sans histoires, avec une maison "si bien placée". Après avoir loué une chambre chez eux, Marie fait livrer, en plus du loyer, des vivres de qualité ainsi que divers petits cadeaux à ses nouveaux amis. Elle orchestre en réalité un trafic d'or et de monnaie spoliés sur les biens des Juifs qui tentent de passer la ligne de démarcation avant d'être livrés aux autorités nazies une fois dépouillés. Marie et ses complices utilisent la maison des Grandclément comme relais de stockage. Les Grandclément décident tacitement de ne pas se poser la question sur les allées et venues dans leur maison et sur la provenance des cadeaux de Marie. Ils préfèrent voir en elle une vraie et généreuse amie, allant jusqu'à refuser la vérité qui éclatera après la guerre.Actors

Deux jeunes Alsaciennes, Alice et Lisette, sont incorporées de force pour fabriquer des obus dans une usine allemande. In France during the German occupation, a young German naval officer is killed in Paris by a group of leftist activists. The compliant Vichy government seeks to appease the Germans by locating the perpetrators and agreeing to the execution of six people, and a special section is set up for this purpose. The section consists of judges who are too ambitious, cowardly or inhuman to refuse such work. The flames of totalitarianism must be stoked, even with innocent blood, and it is especially convenient to the government if the accused are thoroughly expendable in their eyes.

During World War II, Jean Picard (Errol Flynn) is a convicted killer being led to the guillotine. He escapes during an air raid but is captured by French Sûreté Inspector Marcel Bonet (Paul Lukas). They learn that a bridge has been blown up by three saboteurs, and that the Germans have taken 100 hostages who will be killed unless the saboteurs are apprehended by the Vichy police. In 1944, art masterpieces stolen by the Wehrmacht from French museums are being shipped to Germany; the officer in charge of the operation, Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield), is an ardent art lover and is determined to take the art to Germany, no matter the cost. After the Germans remove the art chosen by Waldheim from the Jeu de Paume Museum, curator Mademoiselle Villard (Suzanne Flon) seeks help from the French Resistance. Given the imminent liberation of Paris by the Allies, they need only delay the train for a few days—still, it is a dangerous operation and it must be done in such a way that does not risk damaging the priceless cargo.
