The story is that of a lost semi-classical Thumri song, Lagat Karejwa ma Chot, Phool Gendwa na Maar, sung in 1935 by Rasoolan Bai, the well known singer from Varanasi. The film shows in detail that tawaifs were not mere sex workers, but were great artistes who contributed to music, dance, theatre, film and the Urdu literary tradition.
The documentary describes the life of a Moroccan woman employed as a prostitute in a military brothel by the French Colonial Army who took part in the Indochina War. Past 70, Fadma says she agreed to do the documentary so that France would recognize her as they do their veterans: "I too took part in the war".
