Marius and Jeannette live in the same working-class apartment complex in Marseille, in close proximity with their neighbors. The lame Marius is a security guard at an abandoned cement works, and since the company has gone out of business and the plant will soon be demolished, he is squatting in order to save money. Jeannette is a single mother raising her two children on her own on a meagre supermarket checkout operator salary. They meet when Jeannette tries to steal two cans of paint from the cement lot, and Marius catches her and tries to chase her. The following day Marius comes to her door to apologize, and brings her the two cans of paint. A relationship soon develops between them, but as both have been wounded by marital difficulties, and life in general, they are hesitant to become committed. It does not help that Jeannette's romantic fantasy notions are different from Marius' practical ideas. The two must learn how to love again in order for their relationship to blossom.

En 1967, Dalida se rend à l'hôtel et tente sans succès de se suicider. L'ex-mari Lucien Morisse, son ex-amant Jean Sobieski et son frère Orlando (né Bruno) se jettent à ses côtés pendant sa convalescence. Les trois hommes expliquent les différentes facettes de la personnalité de Dalida. Elle grandit avec amour de la musique grâce à son père violoniste au Caire mais se sentait toujours laide à cause des grandes lunettes qu'elle portait. Elle est découverte à Paris par Lucien Morisse, un programmeur de radio parisien qui finalement, craque pour elle et laisse tomber sa femme pour elle. Dalida est devenue désillusionnée avec Lucien quand il différe le mariage et un enfant pour se concentrer sur la construction de sa carrière. Néanmoins, elle l'épouse, mais rapidement, elle commence une liaison avec l'artiste Jean Sobieski. Elle quitte finalement Jean, pour avoir une liaison avec Luigi Tenco, un chanteur capricieux. Luigi se suicide après s'être effondré et être sorti de scène lors d'une compétition musicale à Sanremo en Italie. Dalida trouve son corps et c'est ce que ses amis et sa famille croient qui a contribué à sa dépression nerveuse et à sa tentative de suicide peu de temps après.
