Two fast-talking insurance salesmen — Wilbur Boswell and J. Addington Ganzy — help penniless socialite Mary Marsh to turn a dilapidated hotel, which was willed to her, into a thriving success. They soon run into trouble, however, in the form of two sets of rival gangsters who want to break into the hotel safe; also, Mary's mother, Rebecca Marsh, wants her to marry wealthy lawyer John Blackwell, although Mary has fallen in love with Wilbur. And while she takes an instant dislike to Wilbur, Rebecca falls for Ganzy. Adding to the complications is the fact that Blackwell is actually in league with the gangsters. Actors Jack Mulhall, Alice Day, Robert Emmett O'Connor, John St. Polis, Claud Allister, Aggie Herring

The film is preceded by a prologue set in 1889 in which we see an angry husband murdering his wife's lover. The setting of the film then moves to 1929, just as an antiques dealer (John St. Polis) has finished moving into the same house where the 1889 murder had occurred. For years the house had been deserted, it's only occupant being the butler. St. Polis moves in with his daughter (Alice Day) and maid and retains the elderly butler to help take care of the house. One night, the police arrive at the house after receiving a telephone call that a murder has just been committed on the premises. When they arrive, the police are surprised to find that no one in the house knows what they are talking about. It so happens that on that day a valuable antique cabinet has arrived at the house and this has attracted several strangers to come to the house to examine it. A young reporter (Jack Mulhall), who has come to see Alice Day, also arrives at the house. As the police are investigating the mysterious telephone call, however, a series of strange murders occur. As Mulhall is helping Day to open the antique cabinet, they find a hypnotized woman inside. The police are then notified but when everyone returns to the cabinet they find the woman has disappeared. One of the police detectives, Robert Emmett O'Connor, is soon knocked unconscious. St Polis is also hit of the head but stays conscious. The son of the former owner of the cabinet is soon found murdered. As Mulhall attempts to call his newspaper, Day is abducted and taken to the wine cellar. She is rescued by a one-legged man who suddenly disappears and is nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, the hypnotized girl appears in a revived state and reveals that her partner, a diamond smuggler, has been murdered with poison. Eventually, Mulhall, assuming the role of an amateur detective, clears up the entire mystery.

A detective, played by Robert Elliott, befriends White and offers to let White borrow the money she needs for a ticket. When she arrives in New York she finds that Manners has been bailed out by a friend and is working for Kenneth Thomson, playing as a gangster who runs a nightclub. Elliott notices that she is paying with bills that have been reported stolen. White confesses everything she knows to the detective about her boyfriend and his new employer. Elliott asks White to get a job at the nightclub so that she can get evidence against the gangsters and in return he promises to clear her boyfriend of any wrongdoing. White easily gets a job singing and dancing at the club. Eventually she hears plans about a bank robbery and reports everything to Elliott. When the gangster attempt to rob the bank they realize that the police are watching and waiting and conclude that someone has informed the police ahead of time. Thompson suspects that White has informed the police. In order to save her, Manners implicates himself and the gangsters get ready to stage an accidental suicide for him.
