Fernando Trueba (born 18 January 1955 in Madrid) is a Spanish book editor, screenwriter, film director and producer.

Between 1974 and 1979 he worked as a film critic for Spain's leading daily newspaper El Pais. In 1980, he founded the monthly film magazine Casablanca, which he edited and directed during its first two years. He is the author of Diccionario (Planeta 1997, Plot 2004, Galaxia Guttenberg 2006) and the editor of Diccionario del Jazz Latino (SGAE, 1998).

Among other awards, he has won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with Belle Époque in 1994, the Goya Award as Best Director three times and a Silver Bear for Year of Enlightment at the 37th Berlin International Film Festival. Miracle of Candeal won the Goya for Best Documentary, and Chico and Rita won the Goya for Best Feature Animation. In 1999, The Girl of Your Dreams was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2011 he won the Award of the Hungarian National Student Jury for Chico and Rita at the 7th Festival of European Animated Feature Films and TV Specials.

As a music producer he has won two Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammy Awards.

He is the brother of David Trueba and the father of Jonás Trueba.

Né à Madrid, Fernando Trueba est le frère du scénariste et producteur David Trueba.

De 1974 à 1979, il est critique de cinéma pour le quotidien espagnol El pais, ainsi que pour l'hebdomadaire Guia del ocio. En 1980, il crée le magazine de cinéma Casablanca. Durant les années 1970, il réalise 6 courts-métrages.

En 1982, il se fait connaître du grand public avec son premier film, justement nommé Ópera prima, primé au festival international du film de Chicago. La même année, il fonde la maison de production Opera films. C'est avec Le Rêve du singe fou qu'il acquiert la renommée, confirmée par Belle Époque puis La Fille de tes rêves avec Penélope Cruz.

Il est l'auteur d'un Diccionario de cine (1997) et a édité un Dictionnaire du latin jazz en 1998.

En 2000, il crée la société de production de musique Lola records avec lequel il produit les bandes originales de ses films, dont Calle 54, qui donnera naissance en 2002 à un nouveau studio d'enregistrement, Calle 54 records''.

En 2016, il annonce avoir commencé le tournage de La Reine d'Espagne, la suite du long-métrage qui a valu a Penélope Cruz son premier Goya, La Fille de tes rêves.
