Florence Reed (January 10, 1883 – November 21, 1967) was a stage, screen and television actress. She is remembered for several outstanding stage productions, including The Shanghai Gesture, The Lullaby, The Yellow Ticket and The Wanderer. Her best remembered movie role was as Miss Havisham in the 1934 production of Great Expectations. In this version, however, Miss Havisham was changed from a completely insane woman to an eccentric, who did not wear her wedding veil constantly, and who dies peacefully rather than as a result of suffering burns in a fire. In the 1950s Reed performed in several early television shows, such as The Philco Television Playhouse, Kraft Television Theatre and The United States Steel Hour.

Biography

Reed was married to actor Malcolm Williams from February, 1908 to his death in 1937. They often appeared in stage productions together. They had no children. She died on November 21, 1967. She was interred in the same burial plot with her good friend, actress Blanche Yurka, in the Actors Fund of America section of Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, New York.

Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn) moves into the Footlights Club, a theatrical rooming house in New York. Her polished manners and superior attitude make her no friends among the rest of the aspiring actresses living there, particularly her new roommate, flippant, cynical dancer Jean Maitland (Ginger Rogers). From Terry's expensive clothing and her photograph of her elderly grandfather, Jean assumes she has obtained the former from her sugar daddy, just as fellow resident Linda Shaw (Gail Patrick) has from her relationship with influential theatrical producer Anthony Powell (Adolphe Menjou). In truth however, Terry comes from a very wealthy, upper class, Midwest family. Over the strong objections of her father, Henry Sims (Samuel S. Hinds), she is determined to try to fulfill her dreams on her own. In the boarding house, Terry's only supporter is aging actress Catherine Luther (Constance Collier), who appoints herself Terry's mentor.

Roles The Black Panther / Mary Maudsley / Faustine

As summarized in a film publication, when the law closes the Black Panther's (Reed) house, she gives her daughter into the keeping of her old friend Clive (Stephenson). Clive dies and the Cub (Reed), now a young lady, learns who her mother was. Lord Maudsley (Foxe), Clive's son, is in financial difficulty. He makes the Cub believe that dead benefactor has left large debts, and persuades her to reopen her mother's establishment to obtain the money. She does, and the former admirers of the Black Panther marvel at the way she has retained her youth. Eventually the Cub meets her mother (Reed), now an old woman, in a dive to which the Cub has fled with an admirer to get away from the man she loved, but feared to face in her new existence. The place is raided and the mother is shot. Later Maudsley admits that it was he who needed the money, and the lover forgives the Cub and they are happy together.
